We have number 2 on the way! What are people's views on the name Camille NN Cami? We are after something elegant but not too frilly and something that will carry them well from childhood to adulthood. How do you imagine someone with the name Camille? Thank you all in advance!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

In my area of the UK, amongst my friends it is a name that would be easy to pronounce and that most of my friends and family are familiar with. In your area/friendship group it is not.
You have made an assumption about me. I have several people who speak French as their 1st, 2nd or 3rd language in my friendship group. Some are French and others are from French-speaking countries. The name is unisex in those countries.

Moreteaandchocolate · 05/12/2024 19:36

Margot is a lovely alternative ☺️

I think you misunderstood my post (and was unnecessarily rude)
@Flustration , I didn't misunderstand, and I wasn't being rude. You made a sweeping statement and I think some people won't have encountered it before.

I'm not sure that someone hearing 'Camee' would necessarily know it was Camille.

The emoji was rude.

The OP asked for opinions. You offered your opinion. I offered my opinion. I fronted my opinion with "I think" to clearly indicate it was an opinion.

I take absolutely no offence to different opinions. Absolutely expected and sort of the point of this board! In my area of the UK, amongst my friends it is a name that would be easy to pronounce and that most of my friends and family are familiar with. In your area/friendship group it is not. That's ok and presumably why the OP was after multiple opinions.

i love Margot

Sunnyflow · 05/12/2024 18:43

Margot was an another French name I'd avoid outside of France. In continental Europe it's pronounced Margott.

Maybe Margot is a better option!

Some don’t realise the g is silent, basically some will get any name wrong!

I think you might mean that the "t" is silent?

Anyway, I love the name Camille.

I didn't realise the g was silent!
Is it Marot? I've been thinking it was Mar-go.

This might be a niche reference though.

You think?

TheNimbleTiger · 05/12/2024 17:49

Camille was the name of the big green blob that Kryton went on a date with on Red Dwarf.

It is the only thing that comes to mind. This might be a niche reference though.

Sunnyflow · 05/12/2024 17:48

I’d just go for Camille ( pronounced Cameel)

No no no - that's the worst pronunciation and neither French nor English.

It sounds like a camel 🐪

MaltipooMama · 05/12/2024 17:47

I love both Camille and Cami! It's been on my top five girls baby names for years but haven't had a chance to use it yet!

AliceMcK · 05/12/2024 17:40

Camille is beautiful, especially in French. Reminds me of Camille in Death in Paradise.

Camilla awful!

IsThePopeCatholic · 05/12/2024 17:38

Only use camille if you’re French. Sounds pretentious otherwise.

Calliopespa · 05/12/2024 17:33

mommyandmore · 05/12/2024 17:20

I am English so as much as I try I don't think I'll ever say it in that beautiful French way 😭 Maybe Margot is a better option!

I’d just go for Camille ( pronounced Cameel) and then Milly works for short.

I’m not so keen on Cami.

AddictedToBooks · 05/12/2024 17:24

I think "Camille" is beautiful. My mum wanted to name me "Carmelia" but didn't because her best friend had just had a daughter called "Camille".
My friend Camille goes by the nn "Carly"

Please pronounce it properly if you go with it. It's a gorgeous name!

Potentiallyplausible · 05/12/2024 16:35

No, it’ll be massacred in English. She’ll be “Cammy” at best and “Camel” at worst. Camilla is much better, and safer.

Sunnyflow · 05/12/2024 16:11

IME it is a well-known French name and very easy to understand and pronounce for a native English speaker.

I don't think many English speakers would hear Camee and know that it's actually spelled Camille in French.

Camille is a beautiful French name, but only if pronounced the French way (Ca-mee)

It sounds cringe when the L is pronounced (Ca-meal) sounds awful

Camilla works SO much better in English! I guess because it IS the English version Grin

mommyandmore · 05/12/2024 15:07

I feel like the overall census is fairly positive so far! Thanks all for your honest opinions! X

...there does tend to be a link between popular TV shows and baby names.
Yes, and with popular pop songs, pop stars, films, film stars, tv personalities, sports stars...
