I met a woman the other day through work called Bronia.

I thought it was so pretty and unusual!

I was looking it up and some websites say it's a Polish name, and some other websites say it's a Welsh name.

Is it a Welsh name does anyone know? I just like to know where a name comes from and what it means.

And what do you think of it?

I was at school with a Bronja (pronounced Bronyah) in 1979.

I love it because it's kind of a masculine sounding name, but the bronia I know is really dainty and pretty.

It kind of makes her seem fierce and strong.

The Welsh word bron is similar to the Irish word bronn that means bosom. Bronn gets said brón hence confusion. And spellings muddled etc.

I work with a Bronia, pretty sure she is Welsh... not that thay necessarily means that's why she's called Bronia. I agree though, it's a lovely name.

Yes it rhymes with Sonia, some people say it "broneeah" and i never corrected them and 30 years later they still call me that 🤣🤣, I also get "briona" lol

My DSS is called Bronisław/ Bronek, which means "sword of god" in Polish. Not heard of Bronia, but I'll ask DH when he gets home 😊

I’m welsh and it’s def not welsh though it could “work” in welsh iyswim as long as she could handle the giggling.
It would be too close to being called Tits.

however not sure how you pronounce the o

In welsh would be a short /o/ like in orange

But it could poss be more like the /ow/ sound as in moan, own

I like it too. I think it's Eastern European. Bronwen is Welsh, but I've never met a Welsh person called Bronia.

Funnily enough, the Bronia I know is Welsh! She is a lovely person and it's a lovely name.

Definitely not Welsh. It wouldn't mean boobs but in would be dangerously close to it. It would definitely raise many titters.

The baby name sites are not reliable.

Bronwen is Welsh (the Bronwyn misspelling is awful)

This is my name!

I love my name and would definitely reccomend it, it sort of suits my personality. My link is Ukranian, however I think it's quite an old fashioned name so not really used in eastern europe anymore. Im married and have a welsh name (my link is quite far back so my maiden name is Scottish )

People always remember it and often comment on it being very pretty. However this means that (a) it's awkward when ive inevitably forgot their name and (b) when i was at school teachers could always easily remember my name to call me out when i was horsing around 🤣

Also Starbucks will always spell it "braunie" for some reason!

Ive seen is spelled bronja, bronya and bronua as well.
