Luka for a boy - would you always think of him from ER??

I really like this name but, having just watched my sky+ ER today, wonder if people automatically think of him from ER or not?
Also, being 'foreign' (European but from where?) does it matter that neither parent is from that country? ie, I always thought if you had an Irish name you should have some Irish in your family somewhere.

I love the name but will always associate it with the Suzanne Vega song!

I know of someone who named their DS Luca. I think he was named after the Chelsea football manager at the time (Jean Luca Vialli)

prefer Luca to Luka, personally. Not so keen on Lucas though, cos of the 'ass' bit.

I think anyone who has listened to the Suzanne Vega song will always think it's a sad name. But most people won't have.

Remember the point about it being mostly girl's names that end in "a"

I guess that is true Hatrick. The OP did ask whether people thought it mattered that it was foreign and that it was made popular by ER. I am just saying that in my opinion it does. Maybe in 50 years I will love the name Luca and it will remind me of the golden years of UK history, back when I was in my twenties and Queen Elizabeth still ruled... . Clearly, I am just an old stick in the mud who hates change.

i beleive it means 'light' which is one of the names i had on a list but ended up with Hayden which means a hedge!!

When I hear the name Luca the first thing that comes to mind is The Godfather.
I do like it.

Quint - it was my great grandmother's name too. It has only recently become popular again, it was very popular in the UK in my great grandmother's generation. That is why I refer to it as traditional.

I know Pheobe is Greek and Ruth is Hebrew etc etc etc. But they are also now traditional English names because they have been used here for sooooooo long. I wouldn't actually advocate many true traditional English names, it would be very hard to carry off Ethelred nowadays.

It has also only in the last few years become popular - I first saw it years ago when doing a school poject on family trees and it was my great great grandmothers name

I think Suzanne Vega too.

I also think that name ending in A are generally girls in English. And I think it's very hard to be a boy with a gender-ambiguous name,

Not watched ER so haven't that association, have got the Suzanne Vegas song (btw it's about someone (I always assumed it was a woman) covering up for an abusive patner - very sad) I would assume the name referred to a girl.

TBH I think the Emma and Pheobe examples are quite different. They are traditional English names and 1000s of women in the UK have been given those names for generations. Therefore the fact that a character in Friends then has that name is unlikely to be people's only, or even primary, association with it. In contrast Luca was virtually unheard of as a name for children of UK heritage until the ER character became popular. Therefore I think it has a much stronger association as a celeb inspired name.

I think its a lovely name - don;t worry about the Suzzane Vega or ER association.

I didn;t call my DD1 Phoebe because DH thought people would think of Friends, he relented and said that we could for DD2 (as he didn;t feel it was as much of an issue) but for my own stupid reasons I didn't - wish I did now.

Go with the name you like and stuff everyone else! Your son will become Luka and everyone will forget about anything else

Also my hubby named our dd Emma at the same time rachel had baby Emma in friends, didn't bother me one bit, people could think what they liked, although i never watched friends, i did look at hubby suspiciously when i found out that rachels baby was Emma but he swears he didn't copy
