We are due twin boys soon and we still haven’t settled on names.

Our current front runners are Hugo and Magnus.

Thoughts? What else might we like? Really stuck!

ps definitely don’t want to do cutesy/matchy or same first initial

Rory
Jasper
Felix

GreyhoundGal1 · 04/11/2024 15:07

If you love Eric what about Dominic? Quite similar sounding and similar vibes to Hugo or Felix for me. Or the names Cedric or Emeric are a bit of a variation on it.

Or maybe Dexter if it's the x sound in Felix you like?

For what it's worth the name Benjamin is also lovely and I don't think too boring.

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/11/2024 00:25

Hugo and Fergus
Magnus and Rory

Hugo and Monty

Yes I think that works. Definite posh vibe but so what 🤷🏻‍♀️

Penguintimes · 03/11/2024 23:58

Hugo and Monty

honestasever · 03/11/2024 23:52

If your surname is Smith, I don’t think Magnus works as it ends with an ‘S’

Calliopespa · 03/11/2024 23:47

I don’t think Jude is overdone . I don’t actually know any.

If you like Magnus but think it’s hard to pair ( I agree), would you like Hugo and Tobias which also has an “us/as” sound? Another slightly unusual name I like is Inigo which works well with Smith, but might go better with Hugh than Hugo ( as lots of o sounds!)

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 03/11/2024 09:34

I really like Hugo but not Magnus.

how about:

Hugo and Louis
Hugo and Luke
Hugo and Thomas
Hugo and Nathaniel
Hugo and Alexander

Firebird83 · 03/11/2024 08:27

I like Magnus and Hugh

user1492757084 · 03/11/2024 08:20

Hugh and Claude
Hugh and Klaus
Hugh and Clive
Hugh and Neil
Hugh and Lyle

Leeloo1233 · 02/11/2024 21:09

Hugh is really hard to pronounce by anyone who is not a native english speaker, speaking from an experience. Hugo is much more international. The posh thing is not a thing anymore, I know many Hugos whose parents are totally normal, nor does anyone think they try to be posh (this is a weird concept anyway, who would try to be posh with their children's names?)

Magnus and Hugo is very cool. Go with that!

ThePoshUns · 02/11/2024 20:42

Love Hugo and Magnus, they go so well together

Calliopespa · 02/11/2024 20:42

Suggestions I like so far

Gregory
Leon
Jude (this feels overdone where I am though?)

I also really like Hugh. Possibly more than Hugo.

I’m not sure I’m sold on Felix but I think it’s the right vibe.

I love the name Benjamin but think Ben Smith is potentially too boring.

Douglas isn’t a name I’ve considered before now but I could be tempted… it’s growing on me.

Love Eric/Erik and this will be used as a middle name. The reason we can’t use it as a first name is long and boring.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I did have a good laugh at Magnus and Spencer 😁

If you like Magnus and want a more matching vibe what about Scandinavian names? It's number 16 in Norway. Soren, Erik, Lucas, Casper, Oscar, iver, Victor.

Tangledramdram · 02/11/2024 17:00

Atlas and Apollo

MerryMarys · 02/11/2024 16:59

I like Magnus but don't like Hugo at all.

I also agree that Smith needs a more memorable first name!

How about

Magnus & Quentin Smith
Magnus & Tristan Smith
Magnus & Vincent Smith

SabrinaThwaite · 02/11/2024 16:30

Conrad
Edmund
Hugh
Alexander
Tarant
Miles

Aquacrab · 02/11/2024 12:38

This is a good point and why we are not totally sold on them.

We’ve both always liked the name Magnus and I think on its own it stands up well but when we found out it was twins my immediate reaction was that in trying to find a name to go with Magnus, we might find ourselves overdoing it and coming across as try-hard. We are in a firmly desirable and affluent part of the country and would be considered middle class professionals, but I wouldn’t say we have a grand lifestyle. Nobody in our social circle or families would bat an eyelid at them in that way though.

I prefer Magnus to Hugo but as I say, I’m not sure it works well as a twin name. They don’t need to be matchy but they need to have a similar vibe and I’m not sure we can get that with Magnus.

Names I like that have been suggested but we can’t use for various reasons

Jasper
Francis
Elliott
Rory
Patrick

Not keen on Angus or Marcus.

I like Spencer but don’t know if I’m sold on the whole surname as a first name thing.

Surname is Smith so I do feel the need to give them slightly more interesting names. We ruled out Max because I’m not sure Max Smith works very well?

Thanks all for the suggestions so far - I will keep moving through the thread and see what else jumps out.

Well you can’t do Magnus and Spencer op!
( Or Mark and Spencer !)

Magnus is also tricky with names like Otis or Otto as it sounds like Magnum Opus.

I agree it’s actually a tricky name to pair with.

I really like Hugo. I think Spencer could work with it, but it does make me think of Frank Spencer ( Some Mums Do ‘ave ‘em).

Daisybuttercup12345 · 02/11/2024 11:35

I like Hugo but prefer Hugh.
Really dislike Magnus.
Oliver
Marcus

Max is a nice alternative to Magnus

The problem with Max and Hugo is it sounds like sizes for boxes of cereal or laundry powder: Huge and Maxi .

Magnus isn’t that much better, meaning great. Huge, great Magnus and Hugo.

I always think Max and Maximus is an awkward name because it’s comical if they are big but also if they are small. To me, Huge-o and Magnus the great have similar issues - and putting them together compounds it all and starts getting silly. I do like the name Hugo on its own.
