Clemency, yes, no, maybe?

I really like Clemency. I feel it is a positive , happy name and a feisty one. I really like Clemmie as a nickname but when I mentioned it to a friend she was really down on it.

i had a French friend at uni who was called Clémence which I thought at the time sounded so sophisticated but again very negative reaction from family

I love it! Kate Silverton (former newsreader turned child therapist) has a daughter called Clemency.

PurebredRacingUnicorn · 01/11/2024 04:32

It's a bit like calling your daughter Prudence or Charity; there is plenty of precedent for doing so, but she probably won't thank you for it.

Ditto

My first thought was "ask for Clemency" but tbh primary school kids won't have that association. It seems a little old fashioned like Prudence / Verity. I've met Mercy / Blessing /Charity /Precious in recent years (adults in their 30s) so clearly the virtue names are still here!

I do wonder if parents give thought to what these names mean. What is “feisty” about clemency?

GoldenLegend · 01/11/2024 03:43

I like Clemence but not Clemency for the same reason everyone else gives.

I think it’s lovely. I’ve never been hugely keen on clementine although I know it is much loved on here but I just think of small oranges. Clemency is so much nicer.

BasiliskStare · 31/10/2024 21:58

Ds has 4 friends "Clemmie /Clemmy " either Clemency or Clementine. I don't think it's a name to be "down on" . I think Clemmy / Clemmie is rather pretty.

twentysevendresses · 31/10/2024 21:57

Hard no from me 😱

Evenstar · 31/10/2024 21:50

It’s a beautiful name, though I also knew a lovely little girl called Clementine nn Clemmy.

I'm not a big fan of virtue names. Find them a bit wet.

I picture Clemency as the morally upright heroine of some very chaste Victorian novel for young ladies. 'Clemency - Faithful and True'.

She probably dies of TB. In a ladylike fashion.

Miss Clemency Millington and her spinster chaperone, Great Aunt Euphemia.

TribulationPeriwinkle · 31/10/2024 21:20

I love it.

Nannyfannybanny · 31/10/2024 21:14

No, and Clementine is an orange.

FennelFan · 31/10/2024 21:12

Too death-row-y for me

Love it. Nice virtue name like Verity.

Verity is lovely

NeckolasCage · 31/10/2024 21:04

No seriously… it’s not great. It isn’t actually a very nice sound, it’s a bit hard to say, will sound terrible in some accents, Clemmie just sounds like clammy or phlegm- don’t do it.

NeckolasCage · 31/10/2024 21:03

I prefer BustedFromJail or IDoneMyTimeGuv

Bideshi · 31/10/2024 20:53

Moreteaandchocolate · 31/10/2024 20:53

I’m not the biggest fan of any of the Clem names as I’m not too keen on Clemmie, but that’s just my personal preference- and if anything I think I prefer Clemency to Clementine.

LlynTegid · 31/10/2024 20:46

No.

Clémence Or Clementine is lovely . Clemency reminds me of the term of like getting off jail time

This! I really like Clementine especially.

seven201 · 31/10/2024 20:43

I know a Clement and he gets shortened to Clem or Clemmie, although I guess he'll grown out of that one as he gets older. I like it.

HumphreyCobblers · 31/10/2024 20:40

I too thought of Susan Hill's third daughter. I love this name. It is nicer than Clementine IMO.

It is a perfectly normal name also!

DearGoldBee · 31/10/2024 20:40

Awful. Sorry OP
