Clemency, yes, no, maybe?

I really like Clemency. I feel it is a positive , happy name and a feisty one. I really like Clemmie as a nickname but when I mentioned it to a friend she was really down on it.

i had a French friend at uni who was called Clémence which I thought at the time sounded so sophisticated but again very negative reaction from family

I like it, but Clem just makes me think of Clem from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a Looseskin Demon. He is very kind but...

Clemency, yes, no, maybe?

Just no

shoopshoopdedoo · 01/11/2024 18:42

Not keen personally

sparklyfox · 01/11/2024 18:20

It's a legal term - strange choice for a name in my opinion

BoudiccasBangles · 01/11/2024 18:19

Clementine? Churchill’s wife was Clementine/Clemmie. Agree clemency makes me think of commuting a death sentence.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 31/10/2024 19:48

Isn’t that the term for when American criminals get let off the death penalty?

My thought exactly. Or is baby daddy (dastardly term) hoping to win clemency so baby is named in "honour" of such an upcoming auspicious occasion?

mamaduckbone · 01/11/2024 18:02

Clementine can also be shortened to Clemmie and is much prettier. Clemency doesn't sound like a name to me.

sinckersnack · 01/11/2024 17:43

I love it.

RuthW · 01/11/2024 17:31

Lovely

Naybody · 01/11/2024 14:38

I prefer Clementine. Clemmie always makes me think of clemmed though.

MerryMarys · 01/11/2024 13:59

While Clémence sounds beautiful in French, in English any variation of Clemency sounds awful imo. Clemmy sounds like clammy

wandawaves · 01/11/2024 10:41

Awful name. And Clemmy sounds like phlegmy 🤢🤮

Park24 · 01/11/2024 10:31

I love the name Clemency. It's a traditional name and I prefer names that aren't used a lot. Ignore the posters who are down on it - if you like it then use it!

yikesanotherbooboo · 01/11/2024 10:29

It's a virtue name and I like it. I much prefer it to Clementine which has 'Oh Me Darling' and tinned orange segments associations for me.

tulipsunday · 01/11/2024 10:04

I don't like it at all sorry. Clementine is slightly better but Clem/Clemmie reminds me of flem

“Oh my darling, oh my darling… like hat boxes without topses, sandals were for Clementine.”

But actually I like it too …

I have to say phlegm occurred to me too. But you can go down rabbit holes with name associations. The Clemencys I know are lovely, vivacious people and I guess that shines through for me.

It's a bit like calling your daughter Prudence or Charity; there is plenty of precedent for doing so, but she probably won't thank you for it.

Well I think Prudence suffers from connections with prudish. I think Clemency is pretty and a lovely meaning.

Clemency is just another word for Mercy, I like it.

Yes exactly. I’ve known a couple and they are lovely ( one grown up now). Classic but under-used. I love it.

Livingonbananabread · 01/11/2024 09:59

I’m not a huge fan of the inevitable Clemmie as a nickname so I wouldn’t choose it myself, but I think the meaning and sound of Clemency is beautiful. There was one a couple of years above me at school, and there’s the Radio 3 presenter Clemency Burton-Hill, who’s written incredibly movingly about her recovery from a brain haemorrhage.

user1492757084 · 01/11/2024 09:49

Clemency and Clemence I prefer to Clementine.
I like the meaning.
I also love ..
Prudence
Liberty
Grace
Hope
Joy

StickyStones · 01/11/2024 07:45

I think it's awful. People are certainly divided on this one!

CurlewKate · 01/11/2024 07:38

It was on my list. I loved it. But I don't like Clem or Clemmie, so let it go. Also dp used his veto!

Raininginparadise2 · 01/11/2024 06:58

Sorry OP but I think it's really awful.

Wrapunzel · 01/11/2024 06:25

My DD's 8yo best pal is Clemency (nn Clemmie), it really suits her
