Thoughts?

For me it’s too surname-y, too American, and too much like Dawson’s Creek.

Why not give the child a first name, rather than a surname? I think it’s really so much better.

vegandspice · 26/10/2024 23:23

A no from me ..sorry.

sonjadog · 26/10/2024 23:21

I think of Dawson in Dawson's Creek, but I doubt that is something people under the age of watching the show when it came out would think of.

NeckolasCage · 26/10/2024 23:21

It doesn’t sound nice though as a first name. Daw for short?

Printedword · 26/10/2024 23:20

I don’t mind it but just hear the opening credit lyric “I don’t wanna wait.. for our lives to be over..” Loved Dawson’s Creek at the time

Potentiallyplausible · 26/10/2024 23:19

Not really. It’s a surname and means son of David, so unless the dad is called David it doesn’t make any sense.

OnNaturesCourse · 26/10/2024 23:15

Don't particularly like surnames as first names tbh but Dawson just seemed nice - but hadn't heard it much so wondered what others thought of when they heard it.

However if there’s a drip feed that it’s a family surname that you want to use as a first name, then I don’t see why not. It’s not teasable or likely to cause him any problems imo - Dawson’s Creek won’t be a reference for most kids (and its hardly a terrible reference anyway, memes aside).

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/10/2024 23:11

Not keen, if you want to go the “surname as first name” route then I think there are much nicer sounding ones out there (Sullivan, Brody, Bennett, Hadley, Fraser, Flynn, Thomson, Lewis, Heath, Clark, Bramwell…) . I think people often shorten to the first syllable too and “Daw” isn’t very nice imo.

SnowFrogJelly · 26/10/2024 17:47

Middle name Les..

SnowFrogJelly · 26/10/2024 17:46

Awful!

PuppyMonkey · 26/10/2024 17:44

I love it but I’m biased because this was my dad’s name (Northern Irish, born 1916). Smile

He had NN Danny.

BibbityBobbityToo · 26/10/2024 17:42

It's a nice name, I know a baby Dawson 😀

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/10/2024 17:41

It’s not my usual style of name but I do quite like it.

Notthebeard · 26/10/2024 17:39

I think of Jack Dawson from Titanic! I don’t like the surnames as first names trend but if you like it then it’s a perfectly inoffensive name

MumChp · 26/10/2024 15:48

No.

No what? No thoughts? Lol

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2024 15:50

A big no from me. It's just an unappealing surname to me.

MumChp · 26/10/2024 15:48

No.

OnNaturesCourse · 26/10/2024 15:47

I'm a 90s kid so I don't think I'm that young lol but missed out being a teen in that era.

Anicecumberlandsausage · 26/10/2024 12:17

I was born in the late 70s so OP saying she's never heard of Les Dawson is making me feel old 💀.

I was also a Dawsons Creek fan, though thise teenagers spoke in ways I really didn't understand but they were all cute, nonetheless.

Anyway, back to your point, OP, given your (assumed) age, Dawson would be acceptable but I don't personally find the name that appealing.

WaltzingWaters · 26/10/2024 12:17

I like it.

SameOldMeals · 26/10/2024 12:15

I really like it.

BoleynMemories13 · 26/10/2024 12:15

I'm generally not a fan of surnames as first names. Dawson definitely isn't one of the worst though.

Daws, as a short form, is quite soft in sound. It probably has a similar vibe/tone to something like Dylan, Elliot etc. A gentle name. Depends what you're looking for a guess.

JimNast · 26/10/2024 12:13

Les Dawson was brilliant. Les Dawson - Wikipedia

Les Dennis is nice. How about Dennis for a name?
It suits DCat to a T.

OnNaturesCourse · 26/10/2024 12:08

I've never seen Dawson Creek so don't know if that's a good or bad thing lol and had never heard of Les Dawson. Googled him and still a bit clueless.
