Malin or Astrid

Despite choosing not to find out the sex of our baby, we called it he all through the pregnancy.

She’s now here and incredible but nameless. We’ve narrowed it down to two and really are 50/50 on both Malin and Astrid. My only thought is that Malin may have nicer nicknames. We’d butcher the Scandi pronunciation and it would be maaaahhlin with a long A.

We’ve gone for Astrid and I love it, it suits the best baby in the world perfectly 😄

Love Marlin

Astrid all the way ladies!
"It is derived from the Old Norse words ass meaning god, and frdr meaning beautiful or fair. Therefore, Astrid can be interpreted to mean Beautiful God or Divinely Beautiful. This name has ancient roots and has been used by Scandinavian families for centuries."
The meaning is wonderful! 👑💗Halo

Astrid

Malin is lovely if you're a Swede. If not she will spend her time as an adult explaining it.

EngineEngineNumber9 · 26/10/2024 14:42

Astrid is my favourite girl’s name ever! 💝

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 26/10/2024 14:41

Maybe I'm biased but I know a Malin and she's one of the best people I know so I'd choose that! Astrid is nice too though

What do you think the "Scandi" pronunciation is?

pinkdelight · 26/10/2024 14:24

Astrid is loads better. Malin is too fishy.

Firsttimebabymummy · 26/10/2024 13:43

Astrid

user1492757084 · 26/10/2024 13:38

I prefer Astrid.

Malin is also sweet.

Do you like ..

Aster - a floral name, softer than Astrid.

LolaJ87 · 26/10/2024 13:28

Astrid is a classic name, so beautiful. Definitely gets my vote!

MaggieBsBoat · 26/10/2024 13:28

They’re both lovely and I knew both in Sweden. And they were both nice people so left me with good associations!

FancyNewt · 26/10/2024 04:04

Neither. What about Marla?

Yeah agreed neither. But then why are you asking a bunch of strangers. Did you think 90% would all say one name?

Carnationstreet7 · 26/10/2024 13:21

Astrid is lovely

JimNast · 26/10/2024 13:00

Why use a Scandi name if you'd butcher the pronunciation?
Marlin - Wikipedia?
Astrid will be easier unless you are going to butcher that too.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/10/2024 09:27

Prefer Astrid, by loads.
Malin - fish, part of Sheffield, French for "canny".

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 26/10/2024 07:30

I assumed it was pronounced with a Mal sound until eurovision this year with Malin Ackerman hosting. Both lovely names, but if pronunciation is an issue, go for Astrid.

CookieMonster28 · 26/10/2024 07:28

Prefer Malin! Not a fan of Astrid

MainStreetOrHighStreet · 26/10/2024 07:27

Am I right in thinking the Swedish pronunciation is a bit like maw-lin? What’s the thinking behind changing it?

Nicebloomers · 26/10/2024 07:15

Astrid is lovely. You’ll have to not mind correcting pronunciation with Malin. I’ve come across it as a surname and pronounced May-lin.

feelinglowandishouldnt · 26/10/2024 06:32

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 26/10/2024 03:37

Malin but I prefer the shorter 'a' pronunciation.

Same. Mainly because I really dislike Astrid!

OtterOnAPlane · 26/10/2024 06:28

I find Astrid very clunky.

I like Malin! The one I know is pronounced May-lin.

Inezz · 26/10/2024 06:19

Astrid.

Malin will get mispronounced and the maah- lin pronunciation is a fish.
