Thoughts on the name Austin/Ostin. We live in the UK and are a mixed race family (if that makes a difference). Please be really honest.

Austin is nice, not keen on Ostin.

I don't think I've ever met an Austin in real life so it just makes me think of the former rugby player Austin Healey 🙂

I don't actually think I said it was pronounced the same way. I said it was the french version/ spelling. Not pronunciation. But thank you.

Saying that you understand Ostin to be the “French spelling” of Austin does imply you think they are the same name with different spellings. They are not, they are different names entirely.

Completelyjo · 23/10/2024 09:24

Well you clearly don’t have French ancestry close enough to know Ostin would not be pronounced as Austin.

Austin is terrible. I don’t mind some old names that date well but Austin is just woeful. I’d hate to be a kid these days with a name like that. Going by all your name threads you’re not really thinking of the child at all. Please consider them in your choice!

I’m pretty fussy with names and can’t stand most of the ones suggested on name threads but I really don’t see anything wrong with Austin. It’s a pretty inoffensive name that won’t be a target for ridicule, doesn’t reflect negatively on the parents and is easy to pronounce.

Iwouldliketogoonholiday · 23/10/2024 09:21

What makes you think I'm not thinking of my child? Do you have any name suggestions that you consider would be thinking of my child in a better way?

I’d love to suggest some but going by the really bad ones you are asking about I don’t know where to start. You don’t sound like someone who’s interested in nice names.

I like Victor.

I Love Austin, it's quite cool imo, sounds like he would be in a band as a teenager.

Switcher · 23/10/2024 09:21

Not a fan, but it's a popular name, quite a lot of 20-somethings seem to be called that (not the weird spelling).

Jk987 · 23/10/2024 09:20

ThornVampire · 23/10/2024 08:52

Can you not put your names in one thread?

Rude!

QuillBill · 23/10/2024 09:20

You should stop posting on it then! I wouldn't have even seen it in active if you hadn't posted on it.

Austin is fine but it's quite popular. Ostin is ok in that at least you can pronounce it.

Why is it any more annoying than four threads by four different posters?

because it clogs up the "active" and if you're not interested in the OPs original thread of "what name"

They're having 1 dc, so 1 name (plus middle names) doesnt need 4 posts

Jessie1259 · 23/10/2024 09:12

Austin is fine, Xavier is best.

clarrylove · 23/10/2024 09:09

Ostin is just odd. Not keen on Austin either to be honest, the word reminds me of autism.

BunnyLake · 23/10/2024 09:08

Perfectly nice name. I prefer the Austin spelling.

Ostin just made me think of ostrich.

LuluBlakey1 · 23/10/2024 08:59

He'll be called Ossy.

NeckolasCage · 23/10/2024 08:59

Xavier is your best choice by a mile. Austin is a bit depressing and clunky.

Much better to put them all in one thread as people can see what your general thoughts are. So like I said, Xavier stands out by mile, lovely name.

Oh wow this is the 4th thread in a row 😆

OP just make one thread with your names in. Making a separate thread for each one is annoying.

Again already explained, I didn't want to. If it's a problem for you please don't trouble yourself and don't get annoyed, just scroll on passed and don't answer to any of it. Thank you

Yes agreed don't change the spelling. He will have a lifetime is saying Austin with an O to people. And then having to literally spell it out because people are stupid.

Iwouldliketogoonholiday · 23/10/2024 08:53

Grepes · 23/10/2024 08:51

If you plan on spending most of your time in France, use the French spelling, if not use the English spelling. Austin has French origin (it’s from Augustin), so will match other family names, with the bonus that your child won’t have to correct people their whole life.

Thank you
