You really want to name a baby Thisbe?

Signe is a super common (girls) name in Norway. It is pronounced "Sing-nah" here.

Xanthe and Raphaelle are also gorgeous.

I wouldn't pronounce Signe as "Sygney", so that would be a no. It's more like "Sinya".

Ruri is nice, but would be mistaken for Rory or Ruairi.

Romy is nice but if she's looking for unusual names, Romy doesn't fit the bill.

I like Xanthe. The rest of the names make me think she is picking an “out there” name for the sake of it. This child will, one day, be a 40 year old with a job and a mortgage.

Not keen on most of the list but Xanthe is great - pretty well known now but not overused.

Thisbe is just too obscure/odd sounding - there are far nicer underused Shakespearean names (Celia is one and it’s very poetic and romantic - it means heavenly and Tudor poet Ben Jonson dedicated his most famous poem to her).

Or literary Romola (George Elliot) with the diminutive Romy? I think Romy as a given name is a bit trendy now.

Or if she just wants romantic/poetic and unusual - then look to legendary names like Isolde or Cressida?

There are plenty of Shakespearean names that are poetic and beautiful but not seen as massively 'out there'. Thisbe is definitely not one I'd go for. It sounds ugly to me. And yes, lots of children (and some adults!) can't say th so it would become Fizzbee ... which suddenly sounds quite sweet to my ear now I've written it down but still isn't what you want for a name!

I love Xanthe. Romy is lovely too.

Just saw how Signe pronounced. If people saw her name written down, they wouldn’t pronounce that way, and if heard it, would probably mis- spell it.

But Thisbe and Xanthe are Greek so I wouldn’t let that stop you from using Ruri.

I went to school with a Xanthe about 50 years ago so that name isn't 'out there'. I think it is a lovely name.

I am not sure about Thisbe because of Midsummer Night's Dream. At least you aren't considering Hermia which would definitely end up as Hernia.

I like Xanthe a lot from your list. Not keen on Thisbe (yes, frisbee) and Signe I adore but it isn't pronounced how you like- in Danish it's much softer and quite beautiful.

Is your friend of Greek or Cypriot descent?As if not, wouldn't that technically also be from another culture? Same as Ruri?
