Girl names help

Please could we have some honest opinions on our girl’s list, any standout favourites or similar suggestions?

At the moment, we are leaning towards Iris, which has been my favourite for years, but I’m suddenly panicking it is too popular.

Iris
Agnes
Erin
Nell
Astrid

I also like (but can’t use) Violet and Harriet.

Middle name is likely to be either Mary or Jean.

Nell is a great name.
All the best people are called Nell..😏

Leaf86 · 04/10/2024 22:58

Thank you everyone! Really helpful. It’s funny how polarising some names can be - I think we may rule out Agnes for that reason.

I do really like Ingrid, but my partner isn’t a fan. Thank you for all the other new suggestions, we’re working through them.

I don’t understand why Iris is so popular as I think it’s quite ugly. Agnes is awful and Astrid is harsh.

Erin is nice but also popular. I like Nell.

17caterpillars1mouse · 04/10/2024 14:06

Oh I missed Erin.

I like Erin, it was very popular a few years ago but seems less so now. I think your other choices are nicer though

17caterpillars1mouse · 04/10/2024 14:02

I only know 1 Iris, it's a lovely nane.

I think Agnes is brilliant too, such a fiesty name. I also like Astrid.

I actually know quite a few Nell's, seems to be on the up.

Have you considered Enid or Ingrid both strong names that have a similar feel to your list

Waterboatlass · 04/10/2024 11:22

Astrid or Agnes, both lovely. I think Astrid Mary sounds better than Astrid Jean, or Agnes Jean.

Unless Harriet is a possible middle name?

Sleepnplay · 04/10/2024 11:18

Love all your choices other than Agnes, which I'm not at all keen on. Astrid probably my fave (although don't like Ingrid.), then Iris.

Also like pps suggestion of Iona, really lovely and was on our list for dd.

KirstenBlest · 04/10/2024 10:23

Iris - such a beautiful flower.
Agnes - I like it but don't like Aggie
Erin - mean girl name
Nell - like it but don't like Nelly
Astrid - prefer Ingrid, but it's nice.

Iris Mary seems perfect.

Firsttimebabymummy · 04/10/2024 07:52

StressedQueen · 03/10/2024 21:55

Iris - Not really a fan but if you like it, it's good, and I haven't heard it that much
Agnes - So bad
Erin - Nothing amazing but nice
Nell - I don't like, Eleanor as a full name is better
Astrid - So pretty and lovely

I prefer Astrid but there isn't anything wrong with Iris

My thoughts exactly. :)

permanently · 04/10/2024 07:28

Iris - beautiful
Nell - cool as

BoleynMemories13 · 04/10/2024 06:18

Iris is beautiful! It's one of my favourite names too. Everyone has a different definition of "too popular". Yes it's top 100, but does that really matter? Far better to choose a name you love. It's nowhere near as popular as the similar Ivy.

I like Nell, but only as a nickname for something more substantial (Helena, Eleanor, Penelope etc).

Erin is ok, if a little dull. Definitely not Agnes or Astrid. Both sound so harsh compared to the pretty Iris.

shoopshoopdedoo · 04/10/2024 05:48

Iris is lovely! I like all of your names and middle name choices, apart from Astrid, which for some reason I don’t like at all.

ThatFlightyTemptress · 04/10/2024 02:48

I agree with pp that Nell just reminds me of death knell

mathanxiety · 04/10/2024 02:41

Iris, Agnes, and Astrid are lovely imo.
Iris Mary
Agnes Jean
Astrid Jean

Erin is a soup brand.
Erin Mary sounds a little too heavy on the 'air' sound, and Erin Jean is too N heavy.

Nell is 'knell' to me; not a pleasant association.
I don't like either of the proposed middle names with Nell either.

I've nothing to say other than I love your list.

loropianalover · 04/10/2024 00:10

I like Astrid and Iris, Nell is awful.

I also like Isla, Audrey, Imogen, Clara, Nora, Nina, and Hazel.

rickandmorts · 04/10/2024 00:07

I had a very similar list of names when pregnant but eventually we settled on Iona 🥰 everyone compliments her name and says how beautiful it is. We don't live in Scotland so it's not very popular where we are.

Moreteaandchocolate · 03/10/2024 23:04

Iris is lovely - it’s rising in popularity but still outside the top 50, so imo it’s the perfect combination of familiar but not overused.

Erin is also lovely and outside the top 50. I teally like how simple, familiar and pretty both Erin and Iris are.

Nell is another great name, and much less commonly used, so a good choice if that’s important to you?

Astrid is quite nice, I’m just a bit hesitant about the “Ass” sound at the start (as a mum of teens…!)

Agnes sounds a bit too old fashioned- I love vintage chic names but this one hasn’t aged well to me.

Suggestions

Mabel
Eliza
Alice
Clara
Freya
Amber
Lila
Stella
Elsie
Florence
Esme
Rosie
Georgia
Lyra
Layla
Holly
Margot
Olive
