As the title says would really appreciate no one being too savage. I am asking for opinions but be gentle with me.
36 weeks pregnant with my third baby , first boy. With my girls I just knew their names nothing and no one could of swayed me but this time I'm struggling
There's one I LOVE but it is quite unique so that's what holds me back but then I think I look on this thread daily currently and in 20 years time when he's an adult his name is not going to stick out.
Surname one syllable Irish name.
Rocky
Sydney ( definitely spelt this way)
Phoenix
Harrison ( would like this as middle name to Rocky)
Sonny ( becoming really popular near me )

Thanks in advance

Do you know what? I like all of them. I've always preferred more traditional names (my 6-month-old DD is Jessica). But since meeting so many babies at baby groups, some with very unusual names, I've become more open-minded.. I've not yet met a baby that didn't suit its name. Pick the name you love. None of the names on your list are outrageous, I could picture a baby boy with any of those names.

That's the thing though. You're not just naming a baby. You're naming a 20,30,40,60 year old.

You have to consider how a name will follow an adult throughout their life.

To OP. If you want a cutesy name then maybe consider using a nickname with a longer or more formal name on the birth certificate to give your child options.

Sidney is a good name.

I also love Roscoe if you'd consider that with Rocky as a pet name.

Thank you all x

Tiger

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 26/09/2024 20:03

They are all of a certain style.
Some people will have a cow about "proper names"

My favourite is Sonny OP.
Harrison is a surname / makes me think Indianna Jones
Phoenix - meh
I like Sydney as he'll have the option of Syd
Rocky makes me think of the film. But it's quite cute.

In a similar vein...How about:

Bear
Caspian
Rocco
River

In ancient mythology, the Phoenix is a female creature.
Sidney is a perfectly fine name for a boy. And has been for centuries. Why change the spelling?
Rocky sounds like a nickname (and that can be based on characteristics/appearance/behaviour/ etc etc for any name you choose).
Sonny seems unfair on a child- just so generic, with nothing individual: 'Yes - it's boy'.

Just personal taste but I prefer Harry to Harrison. (All those male names ending in 'son' suggest that their father was similarly named.)

MiddleAgedDread · 26/09/2024 15:19

Harrison is the only one of those I'd use.
Phoenix is very associated with the trans community these days.

Button28384738 · 26/09/2024 15:07

Rocky - not keen but don't hate it
Sydney - I like but would think it's a girls name spelled this way, would go Sidney for a boy.
Phoenix - I don't mind it, personally wouldn't choose it but it's ok
Harrison - like this one the best on your list
Sonny - I really don't like it, but probably because there's a horrible boy called this in my DDs class

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 26/09/2024 15:05

I like Sydney
I had a great uncle Sydney (I'd have to double check with my mom as to the spelling) but I always remember he was Sid for short.
I like the name ☺️

Rocky Rocco is a no I know of too many dogs with this name

Harrison is nice

Phoenix is okayyy

Smartiepants79 · 26/09/2024 14:50

Ok, so none of them are awful. I wouldn’t choose any of them myself but that’s not the point.
Harrison is the best.
Then Pheonix.
Sydney and Sonny are my least favourites. Ones a place in Australia and the other is just a nickname for any small boy.
Rocky is ok but has movie connotations of course and just sounds more like a dog or a cartoon.

FayCarew · 26/09/2024 14:45

I though Sydney was just a different spelling of Sidney. Like Freddy and Freddie or Myles and Miles.

It seems a bit more unisex than Sidney.

Berlinlover · 26/09/2024 14:01

Sydney and Harrison are nice names. Definitely no to the other names though.

LostittoBostik · 26/09/2024 13:56

Sydney is the female spelling of the name.

What's wrong with Sidney? I like that, and Sid is super cute for a baby

LostittoBostik · 26/09/2024 13:55

Sonny

JemOfAWoman · 26/09/2024 13:54

I've always worked on the basis that if a name works for a baby, a stroppy teenager and a high court judge then it's a good name.

mrssunshinexxx · 26/09/2024 10:19

@TeabySea I'm steering towards doing this just waiting and seeing what feels right when we meet him just strange because k knew with my girls from the moment I found out

I had thought in my younger days, that a DS would be William or Thomas and a DD would be Charlotte or Seren.
Nothing seemed appropriate when DC was actually here, and I did have a bit of a wobble, but none of those names would have suited.

sashh · 26/09/2024 10:51

Rocky makes me think of the Rocky Horror Show. It's been around for about 50 years so I don't think it is disappearing soon.

I'm another thinking the spelling of Sydney makes me think it is a girls' name. I think there was an actress with it.

I think Harrison is the best IMHO.

Not sure it's helpful or not but I didn't name DC, or have a fixed idea for a name until they were born.
There were names I liked, but I had to see my DC to work out what name suited them.

I think your list is fine, if they're names you truly like (and potentially even the more 'out there' one you mention), but maybe wait and see?

ymemanresu · 26/09/2024 09:25

Sonny is nice , where i live, there are lots of Asians spelt 'Sunny' short for 'Surinder'

ymemanresu · 26/09/2024 09:22

Rocky will be nn Rocco straight away but i like that.

MimiSunshine · 26/09/2024 09:10

Harris is the best one of all. Just up with that as his 1st name.

RedOnyx · 26/09/2024 08:09

Sonny = D-list boxer

Or Cher's ex (although his real name was Salvatore).

mrssunshinexxx · 26/09/2024 01:43

No @s3tut0y3r but don't like that but thank you always open to other suggestions
