My great grandma was called Maud and I always thought what an awful old name until the last few months and I’ve completely fallen in love with it!!

currently like;

Maude Elizabeth
Maude Penelope
Maude Vivienne
Maude Jacqueline
Maude Isabelle

I absolutely love old fashioned names 😅

what do you think

I mean I'm 30, prime time for friends to have babies. Maeve, mabel etc are certainly trendy. There's 2 Mabel's in DDs nursery and my friends dd is Mabel.

Maud is another kettle of fish. It's in the same category as Deirdre, Edna, Doris.

Plus the sound of it does remind me of someone hurling. How can bored with an M sound nice for a little baby I have no idea.

Maybe I'm scarred by my great grandmothers horrible sister when I was a kid, she was a Maud, and suited the name.

I always think George sounds like hurling actually do I see where you are coming from with that comment.

That said, I don’t think there is loads of logic to which ones are being rejuvenated and which are still rejected. I don’t think Maud is any uglier than things like Edith - I actually much prefer it to Maeve. Mabel sounds like table: “Mabel, Mabel if you’re able, could you lay the kitchen table.” You can criticise anything. One name I really think is cute is Mildred but that gets put in the dowdy bin even though the sounds are quite light and pretty.

I’m with you! It’s the name of a great great grandmother and I thought it was awful when I was younger, but now I really like it. My pick would be Maude Elizabeth.

Yes, agree

Maude Apatow is gorgeous and carries the name so well. I also think Mabel and Maeve are gorgeous. Maybe some of the people answering here are much older and for them these names sound frumpy.

I don't know what I think of Maura, certainly nicer than Maud. But it sounds a bit like someone saying tomorrow in a very Glasgow slang way - the-maura.

I do like Laura though.

Needanewname42 · 12/09/2024 07:13

Maura is that like Laura with a M?

Yes, can be pronounced either way that Laura is

Sorenlorrenson · 12/09/2024 18:17

Love it !

Thing is though, it's different rules for Hollywood actresses or those who mingle with the upper classes. Maude down the local comprehensive is going to be crucified.

MerryMarys · 12/09/2024 18:16

Maud and Mildred remind me of Mold and Mildew.

DeCaray · 12/09/2024 17:36

Maud is lovely.

Maud Adams spring has to mind, beautiful woman.

KirstenBlest · 12/09/2024 17:35

The Welsh version of Maud is gorgeous.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 12/09/2024 17:33

H's grandparents were called Maud and Claude.

KirstenBlest · 12/09/2024 17:32

I like Maud but dislike Maeve and Mabel.

tulipsunday · 12/09/2024 15:53

Sorry but I think it is awful. No pretty middle name improves it. How about Maeve? Mabel?

Really?! That’s an upgrade. (Head in hands, rolls eyes)

curious79 · 12/09/2024 17:26

She’ll hate you
Unsexy, frumpy, uncool (yet trying to be cool) - imagine being named after a desiccated relative?!
Up there with Bertha, Prudence and Mildred.
Ham and Cabbage were top 10 baby names in the 1800s but we’re not using them…..

yesoknow · 12/09/2024 17:21

Only on this app would people love this name. It's dated and dowdy and other kids will tease a child named Maude.

Leeloo1233 · 12/09/2024 17:16

Maude is so beautiful, I love it!! Defo go for it

Needanewname42 · 12/09/2024 16:16

MerryMarys · 12/09/2024 15:17

It's not that it's old fashioned, it's that it sounds soo harsh. Maud pronounced Mod?! Like Mold without the L....

Yes Mod like mod-ern.
It just sounds harsh or clumpy to me. And very close to Mud.

xxoverworkedandanxiousxx · 12/09/2024 16:11

I’ve been howling at some of these responses 😂I definitely don’t think I’d use it but it has been very entertaining getting opinions! Thank you

It was my great grans name and i used to think it was awful but as time's gone on i love it , i think it's got a moody gothic feel to it .

Dreadful. Sounds like someone retching.

I agree with this. Awful sounding name and also reminds me of someone hurling.

MerryMarys · 12/09/2024 15:40

but would use the European pronunciation Mowd

That's even worse imo

Livinginaclock · 12/09/2024 15:39

Love it, particularly with Elizabeth as a middle name.

Yozzer87 · 12/09/2024 15:23

Horrific, sorry
