Retro/Rockabilly boys names

I made a post about retro girl names that has been really helpful. We had a short list of Dean, Dale, Dewey, Lyle and Floyd for boys. Our favourite is Lyle, but as we got so many different suggestions for girls we’d like to see if there are any suggestions for boys that we haven’t thought of. We like retro names, that are quite uncommon. Someone suggested ‘rockabilly’ which is exactly our type. Any ideas?.

Congratulations and welcome to the world baby Davey John!

Lovely to get the update OP, wishing you all well.

kfellover · 04/09/2024 12:52

Just to update you all, we had our boy on the 2nd, he’s called Davey John. His granddads absolutely love his name and there were lots of tears when we announced it.
Thank you so much for the suggestions and we will be keeping them to look back on if we have another boy next time.

Love it, OP! When you first mentioned rockabilly I thought that sounded awful, but it turns out I really love many of the names mentioned. I love a bit of Johnny, Gene and Waylon!
Davey hasn’t been heard much for a while so sounds crisp and fresh to me, though I do slightly prefer the ‘Davy’ spelling: Davy Jones, Davy Crockett.

Also baffled by the poster whanging on about “identity”… everyone is named according to their parents’ tastes!

oh Davey,
glad you have made your decision with family connections too

Really like Wylie.

To me it sounds like someone is trying to pronounce Reilly but can't say their Rs! 🙈

You have been give some lovely suggestions here. I might be more inclined to go with Eugene over Gene, as Gene reminds me too much of the girl's name Jean!

Billy is still my favourite!

Edit: ops missed your last post about the decided name. Love it!! Good choice

Shergar? Red Rum? Sea Biscuit? Desert Orchid?

I wondered if someone would think that, but no - it was an outsider - when I was a child my aunt made a bet on it purely because we shared a name and it won!

Before the internet, the only living creature that shared its name with me was a racehorse😁.
First thing I did when I joined Facebook was to search for people who shared my name - I found 19 world wide, including a person who had the same surname as myself - I feel so un-special now 😥😥

Nice, OP, and a great family tribute all round.

kfellover · 30/08/2024 14:40

I think we’ve decided on Davey John. Quite outing, but my maternal grandfather is David, my dad and grandad and his dad etc has the middle name of John, and my other grandads surname is similar to David, so it’s a nice nod to the family.
Can also be DJ for short if he wants to, or John/Dave if he wants a normal name when he’s older.

Virtually every child shares their name with someone else though, and op would be derided for wanting a truly unique name

Why? Can’t your son have his own identity?

Gotta be Johnny surely!

I do really love Johnny, but the condom association just puts me off.

Because the rockabilly genre is a hugely distinctive genre and not one associated with Britain or the world for that matter. Im baffled why parents want to give their children names that reflect their own interests and thus saddle their kids with those identities. Baffled I am.

Rockabilly isn't a hugely distinctive genre to everyone (it isn't to me) and you've already said yourself its not one normally associated with the UK so you're contradicting yourself.

Ok, I might make an association if you call your baby Elvis but most other names suggested on this thread? Nope. I wouldn't make the association at all..... i only know the term as i had an old boss who was really into it.

Still 'baffled' why you think a baby given an old American style name wouldn't have its own identity and, judging by this thread, you're the only one thinking this. Hank for example, first thing I'd think of is breaking bad not rockabilly but that doesn't mean baby would only ever be associated with breaking bad and would never have their own identity!

Rockabilly is obviously something you're into and you sound very protective of it but you're seriously overestimating the connection for most people....and doesn't every single parent name their child based on their own likes, dislikes, interests etc? Everyone is inspired by something.

You should probably leave it alone now and just let OP find a name they like without obsessing over what someone you don't know on an online forum is going to call their child.
