Uncommon boys names - shortlist?!

deliwoman1 · 23/08/2024 15:45

We’ve got a shortlist of sorts! But we’re still struggling with falling in love with a name. It was so easy with DD, so it’s getting me down a bit! 🥺

Hoping this thread will help us finally fall for one of them!

Need something short to go with our surnames and uncommon, to go with sis named Vada. What’s your favourite/least favourite? Any other suggestions in a similar vein?

Cato
Iven (softer spelling, can’t get past Russian feel of Ivan)
Levin
Amos
Eden
Linus
Asa (sounds too much like Vada?)

Middle name James or August (for my late Dad). Neither works for us as a first name. 🫠

Virgil would get turned into “Virgin” by teenage boys within 2 minutes here - but maybe you live in a nicer area. If you want an uncommon V name for a boy then Vaughn is quite nice? But if you are asking if same initials are fine for different sex siblings, then yes - I share initials with my brother and have never had an issue.

Thanks for the suggestions all!

Aiken is interesting. I 100% would end up calling him 'Ache' though 😂and I'd hate the nn 'ken.' As DS will have two surnames already, I'm wondering if we can get away with a surname-like first name? I generally like the sound of them!

I really like Evren, so will run that past DP. We're also liking Virgil again, despite ruling out V names because of Vada.

Is Vada & Virgil too matchy? I'm worried it sounds like a kids' TV show! 😂

Levin and Amos best from list although I've only heard them as surnames before. Eden sounds feminine to me. Iven looks like a spelling mistake.

Another vote for Seth. Seems similar in style to your other choices.

How about Tobin or Aiken?

If you like Bram but don’t want a B he could be Abraham, and Bram for short (with the option of Abe too)

Aquamarine1029 · 28/08/2024 21:31

Evren

expiredplants · 28/08/2024 21:25

Are your middle name choices absolutely ruled out? James August and August James are both fantastic.

hereismydog · 28/08/2024 21:12

I love the name Amos.

mrssunshinexxx · 28/08/2024 21:10

MovingBird123 · 24/08/2024 11:58

I would go for Ivo James.

I agree. Ivo James is a great name.

Footnoteintime · 24/08/2024 16:52

I like Amos best.
Im Jewish and Levin is quite a common surname. I can’t think of it as a first name . I know a lot of Levi’s though. All Jewish apart from one who is of Jamaican heritage

MouseofCommons · 24/08/2024 16:42

Amos.

KirstenBlest · 24/08/2024 16:38

@LadyMonicaBaddingham , It's not pronounced Ee-van, in the same way Amy isn't pronounced Ay-mee or Asa as Ay-suh.
Evan would be better. and wouldn't get 'iff-un'/'eye-fan'.
Yvan would work.

MovingBird123 · 24/08/2024 11:58

I would go for Ivo James.

Thanks to everyone who engaged with the original post, and offered useful suggestions. Lots of good ones to think about!

Also we live in London. If people think these names are ‘strange’ (not that anyone asked 🙄), there’s a lot ‘weirder’ to be heard round here. Thankfully!

To all the meanies… 🖕😜

You’ll probably think I’m one of the meanies saying this, but it’s better to be told things than not know when naming a child ( though you might already know) but in Cornwall tourists are called Emmet ( various spellings) and it isn’t meant in a nice way…

August (if August born)
James
Cato

Don't like any of the others.

Beachs · 24/08/2024 08:20

Sorry your list is strange and I don’t like any of them. Eden is a predominantly a girls name so don’t do that to him.

I used to work with a South African whose name was Jaco (Yak-o)

Mumofgirls2017 · 24/08/2024 08:16

Like Linus and Amos. Luke Eden too but prefer for girl and becoming popular. Vada and
