I suggested Imogen for a girl the other day and DP said with a smile "we could call her Midge for short" - and I genuinely love it!

Not sure if just mad baby brain though...?!

I think Midge is a lovely name, and I think it's a cute nickname for Imogen!

The name Midge makes me think of Midge, the Barbie doll. In her case, Midge is a nickname for Margaret.

I don't think about a fly at all, but English is not my first language, so that might be why.

Strangely I love "Mog" - now I see it in the name I can't unsee it.

HappyMouse · 26/07/2024 20:57

Immy is cute

RaraRachael · 26/07/2024 20:55

Hope you don't live on the west coast of Scotland - nobody would thank you for being called midge there 😋

Anonymousbosch39 · 26/07/2024 20:55

I had a friend called Imogen at school. We all called her 'Mo' and she didn't seem to mind.

HaroldMeaker · 26/07/2024 20:55

Midge is cute ! My friend's Dd is Immy, also lovely.

RobertSalamander · 26/07/2024 20:54

Midge like the fly?

I know an Imo and a Ginnie as well as the ubiquitous Immy.

Meadowwild · 26/07/2024 20:52

I know a Mogs. Don't like it, personally, but she seems to.

nc14 · 26/07/2024 20:50

@newleafontheplantjohn She’s Miriam Maisel.

Just call her Imogen.

The MN obsession with "nicknames" continues

That and the obsession that a name needs a longer version so that he or she has 'more options', usually meaning that a Lily needs to be a Liliana even though she will only ever be called Lily.

BeautyPageantDropout · 26/07/2024 18:46

Isn't Mrs Maizel called Midge? I can see it having a resurge because of that.

She is; is it short for Imogen?

newleafontheplantjohn · 26/07/2024 20:47

Midge is a great nickname for Imogen.

Thisismyusername1 · 26/07/2024 20:45

We have an Imogen in the family and call her Imps although her friends mostly call her Immy or Imogen so Imps is more of a family nickname

lastgreat · 26/07/2024 20:44

I knew an Imogen who went by Ginny

WouldUSayImWorthy · 26/07/2024 20:43

RaraRachael · 26/07/2024 20:37

Just call her Imogen.

The MN obsession with "nicknames" continues

So weird eh! Never has the nickname conversation with a single person in real life.

My kids get called all sorts of stupid shit on a daily basis 😆

Firsttimebabymummy · 26/07/2024 20:40

Midge is cute! Also like immy, momo, Gin, Ginny

RaraRachael · 26/07/2024 20:37

Just call her Imogen.

GoFigure235 · 26/07/2024 20:32

Ginny.

Isn't a midge a mosquito?

HareandTortoise · 26/07/2024 20:06

We have an Imogen, she mostly goes by her full name, or lmo, or Gin (her 1 year old brother could only say her name as Gin-gin when she was born and it just stuck!). I think they call her Immy at nursery sometimes but it's not something we use.

I also know of an Imogen who goes by Mimi, which is cute 😍

BoleynMemories13 · 26/07/2024 19:44

Each to their own, but Midge is dreadful. I'm not fond of Immy either.

I've heard of Ginny as a nickname for Imogen, which is think is by far the nicest option.

HowIrresponsible · 26/07/2024 18:59

Midge as in the horrid biting flies? Sounds like minge too.

why would you reduce such a beautiful name to that?

Imo, Immy or radical thought you can just call her by her name Imogen.

SuchGreatFun · 26/07/2024 18:52

Idgie definitely.

Alarae · 26/07/2024 18:50

The only Imogen I know is referred to as Mo by her parents.

Friends will find their own nicknames but you can use Midge even if they don't!

BeautyPageantDropout · 26/07/2024 18:49

I think Barbie's sister was also called Midge. It definitely has that american 50s/60s vibe.

MartyFunkhouser · 26/07/2024 18:48

I have just remembered my grandma was known to her siblings as Mog, which is quite sweet.
