Husband is Greek, I’m English. We live in the UK but are likely to move to Greece at some point. Baby due soon, don’t know the sex, and we are so stuck for names - especially for a boy! I think I’m drawn to shorter names for boys, and Greek names can be very long.

I like Thanos, but I’m worried about the Marvel connection. I’m not into Marvel at all. Do you think the connection makes this name unusable?

For girls, we quite like Penelope, Persephone and Xanthe.

Suggestions for either sex would be gratefully received!

If you liked Thanos what about Theon?

Ahhh… OK, turns out I’d underestimated the Marvel thing. I’m very out of the loop!

It’s a pretty common name in Greece, definitely not made up!! But I’m glad I now know to save future bullying. Back to the drawing board we go 😂😂

@Userusernamename or you could move to Greece. Great food 😜

VampireFinch · 24/07/2024 19:58

I think in the UK people would very strongly associate this with the marvel character, sorry!

Yes, that’s definitely what everyone will be thinking..

It’s what I was thinking!!

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 24/07/2024 15:04

Big, ugly Marvel supervillain is all I can think of when I hear that name.

Isn't Thanos a diminutive of Athanasios?

Thanassis is another diminutive of the same name? How about that?

Bloom15 · 22/07/2024 17:21

My DS is 8 and my mind immediately went to Marvel sorry

Delphigirl · 22/07/2024 16:16

Also like Korina (like Corinna) but it isn’t much used… your DH will have views on that one way or another

Saschka · 22/07/2024 16:15

I know a Greek Kalliope (Poppy), Eleni, Eirini, Lina, Marilena. All super pretty names.

BananaLambo · 22/07/2024 16:14

😂😂😂 Thanos and his mates, Thor, Starlord, and Captain America 😂😂😂

Delphigirl · 22/07/2024 16:11

And of course Sophia is the best Greek girls name bar none 😁

tryingsomethingnew · 22/07/2024 16:11

How about

Calliope (Cali for short) or poppy
Zoe
Pheobe (I think the Friends thing has died down a bit)
Elena (Ellie)
Melina
Lilia
Florentina (Florence, Lauren)

I'm beginning to Anglisise names a bit more now

Mia for Maria
Annie for Anastasia

Delphigirl · 22/07/2024 16:10

Girl names - traditional Athina, Marina, Eleni, Irini
less usual - Evgenia, Mariana, Fotini (love this), kalliope

Saschka · 22/07/2024 16:08

Yep, Thanos, Theranos and Thanatos all completely unusable for various reasons (marvel comic, investment scam, death).

Theo? I appreciate it might be a bit boring, but it’s so popular both here and in Greece that there won’t be any teasing or difficulties in spelling.

chocolateisavegetable · 22/07/2024 16:03

How about Tassos which is a similar Greek name but doesn’t have the Marvel connection

Userusernamename · 22/07/2024 15:59

Delphigirl · 22/07/2024 15:55

In fact Aristides is such a cool name I’m kicking myself that I didn’t use it. But I married a Brit and gave the girls Greek names and the boys English ones…

Sorry - last reply not to you!! What are your girl name suggestions please since I like your ideas!?

My only thought. I didn't realise it was a real name, thought it was a made up Marvel character name.

Yeah same, 100%! My head went straight to a big purple guy with a glove fetish....

Delphigirl · 22/07/2024 15:54

I’m still thinking - I like Ilias/Elias and it works in English. I also like Aristides and Christos.

Userusernamename · 22/07/2024 15:52

Delphigirl · 22/07/2024 15:47

I’m half Greek and even think of marvel, and have never watched a marvel movie!
I do like the usual yianni, nikos, andreas, Alexandros etc but if I was going a bit more unusual and didn’t have to make it after a grandfather (which is usual, frankly, are you sure you won’t need to use papou’s name?!) then I love Isidore Iσίδωρος, Marinos and Haris.

Edited

Thank you!! Lovely suggestions. Papou has already been honoured so we have free rein this time!

Too close to Thanatos, the Greek word for death, imo.

This. First thing I thought of- and I'm not even Greek

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/07/2024 15:52

It’s a lovely name - however I had no idea about the Marvel thing, and clearly the rest of the world does, so maybe a rethink is required, lol.
