Pip for a boy...

Probably just hormonal, but have been calling my bump Pipsqueak, as it'll be the last of four. If I get too attached to it (the name, not the baby, obviously!), what could it be shortened from other than Phillip?
Although on hearing my explanation for Pip, dd1 has sworn to call it Runt....

Just to reinforce, the Pip in my family DOES have Great Expectations; he already has a pilots license and is currently in his final year studying law at Oxford.

The main boy character in the great classic film 'great expectations' was named Pip. Ive never forgotten it.What a great name. Go for it!

Yep. But don't think Peregrine would be a brilliant boy's name! Perry maybe, but sounds a bit Brideshead.

Pippin the hobbit was short for Peregrine I think.

My nephew was Philip, shortened to Pip (as in Great Expectations) until he turned 11 when he announced he wanted to be known as Phil from now on He is 21 now and we still call him Pip from time to time, just to traumatise him

OMG, don't call him pip. It is very feminine. If you need to call him Phillip and shorten it to Pip if he doesn't kill you and Phill if he likes it.

I just think you can call him Pip. Its fine! Its a boys name too. so, just go with Pip! Is it def a boy then?

We already have a Phillip in the family, although he's called Billy . My dd3 has a bizzare fairly hippy name that we shorten to a much more 'normal' name, so have kind of done it the other way round there.

Seriously, can you not call him Philip on the birth certificate, but always use Pip, then when he grows up if he prefers Philip, he could use it?

Friend of mine has done that with Toby - he is Tobias officially but always known as Toby.

then pippin but realised that thats auntie mables dog

should clarify: love pip, pippin, pipsqueak, but Do Not Love David Archer, who uses said dimunitives for his teenaged daughter in T' Archers

I love it - it's really sweet and unusual but not stupid (imho)! But Pippin is a Hobbit's name, if that bothers you at all! And of course Pip is from Dickens if you hapen to like Dickens, which I don't.

Cool name though!
