Tory-Girl Aesthetic Names

Tongue in cheek title as my colleague joked I ĺiked "Tory" names. Anyway, we're down to the last three - I have a strong favourite, DH has a strong favourite and the third is more of a compromise. So interesting to see what the consensus here is! If it helps, (potential) DD most likely won't be going to state in case there are any comments about potential bullying...

Why can’t I see the poll?

TopThreeFTW · 16/07/2024 20:44

Thanks everyone for voting! I'm quite surprised DH's choice won by quite a margin though. I had half a mind not to tell him...

I like Henrietta obviously as it's in the Final Three but I'm not so keen on any of the shortenings esp Hetty. I already have a daughter with a 4 syllable name who doesn't actually recognise it (parenting fail) as her 2 syllable nickname is the norm. But I cannot ignore the Mumsnet majority!

The Gwendoline spelling is because I grew up loving Malory Towers so it looks more 'right' to me 🤷🏼‍♀️

Secret passion for elegant, classical (and Shakespearean) Cressida - but it is a rare one and stands out.

Plus I do love the pretty and straightforward nn Gwen and Gwendoline might stand out the least of your 3 picks (although again, secretly love Gwen as a nn for more out there , romantic sounding Guinevere or Gwyneira) .

Least keen on Henrietta - bit too stereotypical boarding school and harsher sounding.

I love Portia. I know it's not one of your choices. I chose Cressida as the least worst of those!

I like the Gwendolen spelling - in addition to being the original Welsh spelling (I think?) it also seems the most intuitive to pronounce. I like Cressida too. Not really fan of -etta or -ette names, which feel maybe a little bit old fashioned at the moment, but Henrietta does have some nice short forms.

I would not have thought of your choices as "Tory" necessarily - of the two Cressidas I know IRL, one (generally known as Cress) had socialist activist parents and the other came from a noticeably apolitical family.

Edited

Agree, I actually think it’s the more woke, arty farty types that choose the more ‘out there’ names. True Tories would be more bog standard Charlottes, Williams etc

Ribenaberry12 · 14/07/2024 18:42

Tory-est girls I know are Cordelia (Cord), Victoria (Vix) and Harriet (Hatty).

Jemimapinotduck · 14/07/2024 18:17

Only like Gwendoline, the others, in particular Cressida are awful sorry

KirstenBlest · 14/07/2024 17:35

Margaret

LiterallyOnFire · 14/07/2024 01:21

Oh good. My names in there. I don't want anything to do with a "Tory girl aesthetic". Bleurgh.

Just give her a standard name and call her Tiggy.

Can't vote for any of the three, all awful.

Suggest Venetia or Sibylla. Lovely posh names and are not on the ONS latest list of baby names.

P.S. Sibylla is pronounced Si-BILL- a.

Love Gwen, although not so keen on Gwendoline - but I prefer shorter names. Gwenan is nice as an alternative.

Also like Etta. Not keen on Cressida at all.

Cressida makes me think of Cressida Dick.

For full posh girl styles she should have a really daft nickname like Pooh or Bunny
