Last post.... I hope!
Juliet. What do you think? Is it likely to be shortened? Is there teasing potential with Romeo and Juliet or should we be okay?
It's the name I loved for a girl as a teenager but got loads of along the years.

I always find it funny/interesting when Juliet is floated as a potential name on Mumsnet as people are always so positive and no one brings up the Shakespeare/suicide reference and just say it's a beautiful name and yet when Ophelia is mentioned all people can talk about is her sad story and how they could never use it for that reason! Makes no sense to me. I have an Ophelia and another female Shakespearean name for my 2 girls' names so it works for me! Just find it an interesting double standard.

Interesting. Perhaps it's because people often forget or rather ignore and gloss over the dreadful, tragic double suicide ending of Romeo and Juliet and only ever remember or think of it as a story of young love and star crossed lovers?

Ophelia is beautiful too. There's a lovely song called Cry Ophelia. I think it might be a sad song actually! I can't remember the lyrics but it's lovely, it was in Dawson's Creek.

IamaRevenant · 11/07/2024 15:28

My sister is a Juliet so I'm obviously biased when I say it's lovely!

It does get shortened to Julie though, even though she herself always uses the full name.

She also gets the Ali G song sung at her all the time, which is annoying! Probably a lot less likely as time passes though and I very much doubt anyone is going to be singing to your small child about her 'big babylons' 😅

I love the name Juliet, I'm not sure I've ever met one in real life, shame it's so underused

MistyHazelFox · 11/07/2024 13:16

I love name Juliet - with July or Jet nicknames, but others are also nice. I'm not fan of Juliette spelling.

Jessieshome · 11/07/2024 12:25

Absolutely beautiful!

I'd spell it Juliette though if not told otherwise.

I'd be very adamant with all that met her though that it is Juliette, not Jools/Ju/Julie. Ettie is cute, and way better than Jools etc, but nowhere near as beautiful as Juliet/Juliette.

iAmBarbara · 10/07/2024 22:47

Absolutely my favourite girls name and I would have used it if I had a girl (2 boys!)

again, not keen on the standard shortenings of Jules/Julie but I would just use the full name or even Jet or Ettie

SummerRose999 · 10/07/2024 22:34

Thank you! I think the search is over.... Juliet is feeling like it could be "the one" right now. Makes me smile when I say it, which I think is a good sign. And I love Ettie too, if we end up using a nickname I'll definitely steer to that not Julie or Joules.

Beautiful name. Really classic.

DidYerAye · 10/07/2024 18:02

A beautiful name - bravo!

I see what you did there!

OP, it's a gorgeous name. I always bang on about this but it's nicest pronounced the English way with the emphasis on the first syllable, not like the French Juliette.

CherryRipe1 · 10/07/2024 22:04

Love Julia, hate Juliet/Juliette. It sounds naff & twee with the 'et' on the end.

Hopefulbride18 · 10/07/2024 21:59

I have a Juliet with shortening of Ettie - so obviously I think it's a great choice !!

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/07/2024 21:55

SummerRose999 · 10/07/2024 18:48

@Nicebloomers Awh I love Ettie! That would definitely be my choice over Jules and Julie. Thank you 🙏🏼

Yes I love Ettie too! It’s nice that there’s the option of Jules too though, if she likes 😊

I disagree with pp that it would get shortened to Julie though - I’m a Julia and none of the other Julia’s or Juliet’s I’ve met have ever got called Julie intentionally (only by older people who mishear the name as Julie was so popular 60 years ago - I know loads of (older) Julie’s but only a few Julia’s and Juliet’s).

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/07/2024 20:52

Beautiful ,elegant and so underused (wish I could use it!). And Juliet is definitely the nicer spelling imo (unless you are French). Romeo and Juliet not an issue - just makes the name even more classic sounding. NN Jules, Etty, Lettie, or Jet - but it’s so lovely in its own right it almost seems a shame to use a nn.

Carouselfish · 10/07/2024 18:52

I love it, went for Juliette as middle name as worried about shortenings.

cloudy477654 · 10/07/2024 18:50

Beautiful! Classic name that will never sound dated

SummerRose999 · 10/07/2024 18:48

I think it is lovely

Nicebloomers · 10/07/2024 18:37

I think ‘Ettie’ is a sweet shortening

ginasevern · 10/07/2024 18:35

It's beautiful and under used. Try to steer towards Jules for short though rather than Julie which I think devalues the name.

savethatkitty · 10/07/2024 18:27

Love it. Could get shortened to 'jules'.

Nicebloomers · 10/07/2024 18:25

It’s very pretty without being frilly. A very underused name I think.

Awrite · 10/07/2024 18:23

I love it.
