Poppy or Ivy

Long awaited rainbow baby girl on the way. I can’t decide between two names- Poppy or Ivy. I know cutesy names aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but please be kind.

Poppy was my favourite for a long time (I’ve been doing IVF for years). Then I was slightly put off because it seems to be a very popular pet name. But my mum and sister LOVE it - this is their pick, which is making me re-think. I’ve also seen Poppy get a lot of hate on Mumsnet for some reason.

Ivy was a new favourite. Maybe it’s a little fresher than Poppy as Poppy has been popular for a while but Ivy seems to have more recently become cool. It was going to be Ivy in my mind and I had already started calling her Ivy when talking to my bump. But now I’ve discussed it with people and they all prefer Poppy - I’m confused.

What do people think? ☺️

oh sorry hadn't seen the update...

Ivy is fresher than Poppy (which is a popular dog name like Luna etc.) but I would assume you are a Goth or used to be a Goth. I personally prefer less common names.

Does the name need to end in -y?
Then Posy or Penoy

Otherwise Briony, Fern, Daphne, Mimosa, Iris, Laurel, Marigold, Sorrel, or one of the tree names such as Linden.

Susannah means Lily.

Not keen on either - sorry

Poppy is too cutsie for an adult and loads of pets called Poppy.

Ivy is nice, but so popular now.

Firsttimebabymummy · 03/05/2025 10:40

Huge congratulations!

ChateauProvence · 02/05/2025 18:07

Sorry just seen your update! Love it - I am biased as I have a little Poppy x

ChateauProvence · 02/05/2025 18:07

Poppy , Ivy is lovely too but I love Poppy

TinkerTinkerbelle · 02/05/2025 17:17

@cloudy477654 , Ivy was the 6th most popular name in England & Wales in 2022. (Lily was no 5.)
Poppy was no 13.

cloudy477654 · 11/07/2024 18:12

I prefer Ivy just because as you say Poppy is quite popular

custardcreamx · 11/07/2024 17:36

As a fellow Poppy, that would be the perfect choice

UltramarineViolet · 11/07/2024 17:34

Poppy much nicer in my opinion, although it has been popular for 20+ years I know very few IRL and would be surprised if it's ever hit through top 10

Ivy will got lost in a sea of Iris/Isla/Evie/Ava/Ella - Poppy is much more memorable

TinkerTinkerbelle · 11/07/2024 17:26

Thank you for taking time to reply everyone ☺️ x

Ivy is a horrible, jaggy plant - why on earth would you want to name your daughter after that? Such an awful, harsh sound. It isn’t fresh whatsoever either and was immensely popular about 5 years ago (at my poor niece’s expense!)

spiderlight · 11/07/2024 11:55

Honestly, go with whichever feels right to you. Ignore what everyone else says - she's your baby. I let a friend put me off my favourite name for a totally spurious reason and I still regret it 17 years later. It would have suited my DS so well and he prefers it to the name we ended up using. I wish we hadn't discussed names with anyone beforehand.

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2024 11:51

Ivy is gorgeous and strong.

I really dislike Poppy, it's too cutesy for my taste.

FailBetter · 11/07/2024 11:24

Ivy is too old for me personally, probably as I had a great aunt by that name.
Poppy is too young but I love the flower so much.
I voted for Poppy.
I love names like Lily-Rose (sounds like poetry), Holly, Jasmine, Heather, Rowan, Eden. I don't think you can go wrong with plant or flower names tbf although Violet also feels older like Ivy. Bluebell is Geri's daughter, isn't it?
Poppy is vibrant, sunny and you can get some lovely poppy-related gifts as they grow up (I have a poppy scarf which is floaty and gorgeous so I freely admit I am biased).

ginasevern · 11/07/2024 11:14

Both are very popular, so do bear in mind she will be one of thousands with the same name. Out of the two I prefer Ivy, it's a stronger sounding name and perhaps ever so slightly less common.

JimNast · 11/07/2024 10:02

Ivy is currently more popular than Poppy according to the ONS.
Poppy has been popular for a while so will be fine on an adult.
Ivy seemed to have become popular with the Evie, Ava, Eva, Isla trend.

A poppy is prettier than ivy.

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 11/07/2024 09:45

I love both names. Poppy is more common than Ivy, so I'd probably go for Ivy.

Karatema · 11/07/2024 09:39

My lovely DAunt Ivy hated her name and I loved her very much so sadly it's influenced my dislike of the name 🤣 plus I hate the plant - it overtakes everything!
Love Poppy and the flower 😀

SerafinasGoose · 11/07/2024 09:25

I personally prefer Ivy. 'Poppy' I find too sing-song and just a bit too cutesy. But it's all about what you prefer.

Many congratulations on your rainbow baby.

JimNast · 11/07/2024 09:21

Poppy. I don't like Ivy.

Roselilly36 · 11/07/2024 06:24

Many congratulations OP, personally out of the two I would chose Ivy, Poppy a popular name for a dog in my area, so that would put me off.

Beachs · 11/07/2024 06:17

Firstly congratulations, been thee done that soo I know how exciting this is for you. Both names are beautiful to the point I’d wait too see what you think when she arrives xx
