I had a friend at school whose name was Inji. She said it was Turkish for pearl, which I have always thought was a pretty name.

I know a Lunara, I think it's a beautiful Turkish name

Prepare to correct names with an ‘i’ in them too, as English speakers automatically what to use the ‘ee’ sound instead.

Unless your name is Yiğit when the ‘i’ sound will be used liberally, along with the unwanted hard ‘g’. It should be pronounced more similarly to Yeet.

I would also say avoid and names with the ç ur ş letters in them unless you're ok with them constantly being changed to ch or sh when spelt in English 😀

Yes, and anything containing the letter 'C' if you don't want different pronunciations as 'C' is said like 'J' in Turkish language.

For example the name Ercan is pronounced 'Er-Jan' in Turkish but would be pronounced 'Er-Kan' by English speakers.

My daughter is Yasemin - which lovely but is constantly spelt incorrectly! What about Harika? Means 'wonderful'. I also like Dilara and Elif as well as Sevdiye.

KirstenBlest · 18/08/2024 17:22

I like it but the spelling would be tricky on a UK keyboard. Eda seems much simpler.

Is Çiğdem 'Chee-dem'?

Yes, that's right.

I know a young girl with Turkish parents who's name is Eda.

It's a sweet name which works in any language without immediately being associated with any specific one IMO, not sure what others think.

Oh yes. Very nice! Çok güzel 😀

I love the name Elif.

Also Melis and Çiğdem, although I'm sure the spelling and pronunciation of the latter would cause endless issues!

GBooArt · 18/08/2024 15:32

I love the name Elif.

KirstenBlest · 18/08/2024 15:20

One of my neighbours has an Inaya (or Anaya). It sounds like Annoyer. Her little brother used to call her name several times a minute and he has aloud voice.

Commonsense22 · 18/08/2024 15:05

Absolutely love your choices OP. Inaya I had never heard and is beautiful.
