Saskia or Paloma

Hi :)

Due with a baby girl this August and struggling to decide between Saskia and Paloma…

I have always loved Saskia but many family and friends aren’t as in love with it. It’s still my favourite as looking for something less common and beautiful for a girl.

Thoughts on which to go with?

I much prefer Saskia. It's lovely. Paloma means pigeon - to be honest I wouldn't want to be named after a pigeon!

Meredusoleil · 16/06/2024 10:54

Saskia.

You do know Paloma means dove in Spanish, don't you? But unfortunately, the same word also means pigeon!

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 16/06/2024 10:50

I have only met one Saskia before and she was also known as Sacha for a nickname. I think both Paloma and Saskia are lovely

Tadpole10 · 16/06/2024 10:47

Both are fantastic names! But very different. You need to wait until she is born and see which one suits her.

For me, Saskia is delicate, beautiful is a classic way, fine featured
Paloma is angelic, soft and sweet.

However neither may suit her when she's born! We had 3 names waiting for our DD and when she was born none suited her and we had to find another.

I love Saskia.

TheCadoganArms · 16/06/2024 10:32

Sadly every Saskia I have known has been an utter twat which probably clouds my opinion of an otherwise fine name.

Saskia is like a stripper name. Not a fan of Paloma either.

Proves the point of not telling other people your name choices! FYI it’s an old Dutch name. Rembrandt’s wife etc.

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 16/06/2024 10:26

If you've always loved it you should go with it. I changed DD's name for this exact reason and it was hoohah best avoided.

IMO they're both beautiful names.

WaltzingWaters · 16/06/2024 10:23

Saskia. Really not keen on Paloma at all.

miniaturepixieonacid · 16/06/2024 10:21

I love Saskia. Quite like Paloma too but it's a long way second imo.

MotherofChaosandDestruction · 16/06/2024 10:14

I love both but Saskia is a really strong choice!!

Teamarugula · 16/06/2024 10:14

I have always loved Saskia! I don’t like Paloma though.

strawberry2017 · 16/06/2024 10:12

I don't love either but I would pick Paloma. Saskia sounds quite harsh to me.

One recommendation I always have is any name you like try shouting out and hear how it sounds as if you were telling
Your kid off in the school playground.
That actually made me realise what names I loved and what sounded awful 😂

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 16/06/2024 10:10

And best not to tell/ask people in advance! (Only us!) You'll always get relatives turning their noses up.

Wolfiefan · 16/06/2024 10:01

Saskia. Definitely.

Moreteaandchocolate · 16/06/2024 10:01

I vote for Saskia - lovely name!

Gemstonebeach · 16/06/2024 09:47

saskia is lovely!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 16/06/2024 09:42

Saskia is a fabulous name. Paloma is OK but yes, is a bit like Pamela. Sienna is not fabulous. Mind you, DD was nearly Savannah. I'm so glad I didn't go for that.

Sleepnplay · 16/06/2024 09:42

Another vote for Saskia here. Paloma is OK, but I really like Saskia. And if its what you've always loved you will probably regret it if you don't use it due to others opinions.

StripedTomatoes · 16/06/2024 09:13

Neither is a great option. Sienna?

Nah Saskia and Paloma are far nicer than Sienna which is now a bit "Love Islandesque"

Spirallingdownwards · 16/06/2024 09:38

Saskia was our girls name but we had all boys.

But I am loving Paloma too and hadn't ever really considered it.

If you have always wanted Saskia go for it because you will regret it later. Don't even talk about it to anyone now. Just announce her name when she is born and they will get used to it.

aveenobambino · 16/06/2024 09:37

Definitely Saskia

KnitnNatterAuntie · 16/06/2024 09:36

Saskia is by far the better of the two names IMO

Koko83 · 16/06/2024 09:36

I love Saskia! Its so pretty and cool and strong all at once 💜
