Miri as standalone name

MumtobeJul24 · 14/06/2024 08:11

Expecting first baby soon.

DH and I both love Miri as a name but none of the longer versions.

Does it work as a standalone name? I think it does and keen to use, husband not so sure.

thanks

Yes great although I may assume the longer name is Mirella or Miriam, the same as meeting someone called Abbie I would assume their official name is Abigail although I know that doesn't need to be the case. Go for it! Can't use Siri anymore!

My name is Miriam and go by Miri. I love my name and have only ever received compliments. Most often on the full name, Miriam x

You have a lovely name!

It seems more common these days to use short names as stand alone ones. Think Molly, Charlie, Albie etc. Go with a name you like, no need to invent a longer one that you don't.

HelterSkelter224 · 22/06/2024 10:15

I knew a Mihri (Turkish) and thought it was a lovely name

Fgfgfg · 22/06/2024 10:07

Miri is a Japanese girls name and means beautiful.

Deedeeee · 22/06/2024 10:02

Miranda?

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 22/06/2024 09:56

I was thinking Annie for Marianne actually.

Thanks for your comments everyone.

do you think Marianne could go to Miri or is that too much of a jump?

Just don't. It will be abbreviated to all sorts by all and sundry, probably including yourselves. I don't see the point, do you want her as Miri in school? Do you want her introduce herself as Miri or Marianne to friends? I think they're very different names and Marianne will likely be Maz or Mazza!

I know two little girls called Miri, both families are Welsh speaking. It's a lovely name, meaning happy / joyful.

Thanks - we aren’t Welsh but I don’t think that matters…

To close to Myra.

KirstenBlest · 19/06/2024 23:55

I think of it a meaning Mirth, so it seems a bit strange, but it's a happy sounding name.

Is it really a name, @Mwnci123? It makes me think of Miri Mawr.
It comes up on Darkgreener.

Edited

I know a Miri. Only the one though, so maybe it's a stretch.

The Miri I know is shortened from Miriana (Italian) which is lovely

ZenNudist · 15/06/2024 07:37

Or just call her Mary. That's a great name. Similar sound.

ZenNudist · 15/06/2024 07:36

Awful. Fine as a nn for Miriam. Sounds like a sister voice assistant to Siri

LittleMissSleepyUK · 15/06/2024 07:34

I like it. I really dislike Miriam but Miri is quite sweet

buma · 15/06/2024 07:32

I love it!!

PurBal · 15/06/2024 07:31

Yes, I know one.

Mwnci123 · 15/06/2024 07:28

Miri is a name (not diminutive) in Welsh. I like it.

localnotail · 15/06/2024 07:12

Sounds a bit like Siri, or any other generic brand name.

MartyFunkhouser · 15/06/2024 07:03

I love it. I’ve only ever heard it on that tv show which I can’t remember the name of.

Miriam is a bloody awful, dreary name. You don’t have to go for a longer version.
