Honest Opinions on the name Finnick?

Hi! We are 21 Weeks with our first born son and have settled on the name Finnick. We were originally looking at Finnigan but much preferred Finnick. Really not keen on Finley and wouldn’t mind if it was shortened to Finn but want more than just Finn as his name. I know it’s a character in hunger games and we wanted a name that is really unique for him without being too weird - short backstory I went to school with a girl with the same first and last name as me and she was popular so I was deamed “unpopular xxxx” which wasn’t fun so I always said I wanted a unique name but I don’t want to push it too far and it be weird. Thanks ladies - P.S hormonal preggo here so please don’t be brutal.

Don't make up a name, just use a tried and tested one.

I think it sounds like finicky so I wouldn't use it.

There are lots of lovely less common names out there. But remember that names go in and out of fashion. I have a name that was incredibly popular when I was born, and there were two other girls with the same name in my class at school. So I was determined that my dc would have "uncommon but not ridiculous" names.

With DS 26 years ago, I loved the name Noah but was talked out of it by my mum who was a primary head teacher. She said he would be horribly teased about such an old fashioned name. And yet within 10 years Noah became very popular.

Is it even a name? I assumed it was made up by the Hunger Games author.

character in Hunger Games is brave but has a dark story.

I'm not keen sorry. It sounds more like a surname, and makes me think of "Finicky".
Why not just go for Finn?

It's awful, sounds made up and like finicky, which means fussy and so isn't a positive word. I'd choose something similar that's a proper name that people will recognise, otherwise you'll spend your lives spelling it out and explaining while people give you 'WTF?' looks.

You don’t have to go really off-piste to ensure your child isn’t stuck with several others of the same name all through school. I hear you on that as I had a very common name, and there were no fewer than four of us all through primary in a class of 32. I gave DS an uncommon name, but a long-standing name, from the Bible, just not one that’s much used now.

I agree Finick says ‘Finicky’ or Hunger Games tribute’. Lots of better names include Finn. Finbar, Fintan, Phineas? I don’t like Finnegan. Don’t use other cultures’ surnames as names unless you’d be fine with calling your child Jones, Smith or Robinson.

Is it even a name. It sounds like a made up name and every time your boy says it he will have to spell it. My husband has one of those names and it’s really annoying for him. Don’t saddle your child with a name like that. Every time you say his name people will say “pardon” and you’ll have to repeat yourself.

I know a Finnick, and not once have I (or mutual friends) thought finicky. He does get called Finni for short sometimes though

Not my usual taste in names but my first thought was what about Fennec? It's a type of fox. Similar sound but less finicky.

(Although a quick Google just showed me there is also a Star Wars character with the name)

Another vote for fenwick - I work with one, he very cool. Everyone calls him fen
