Honest Opinions on the name Finnick?

Hi! We are 21 Weeks with our first born son and have settled on the name Finnick. We were originally looking at Finnigan but much preferred Finnick. Really not keen on Finley and wouldn’t mind if it was shortened to Finn but want more than just Finn as his name. I know it’s a character in hunger games and we wanted a name that is really unique for him without being too weird - short backstory I went to school with a girl with the same first and last name as me and she was popular so I was deamed “unpopular xxxx” which wasn’t fun so I always said I wanted a unique name but I don’t want to push it too far and it be weird. Thanks ladies - P.S hormonal preggo here so please don’t be brutal.

We named our son Finnick and so far everyone has commented on how cool his name is. No one has every said his name makes them think of finicky.

I’ve heard a few mentions of Finbar. I’m sure this is just me but the name is forever tainted by VIZ: Finbar Saunders and his double entendres!

Yes it absolutely is ‘too weird’.

First thing everyone will think of is Finicky which isn’t nice at all, second thing is ‘naff made up name from a show’.

Also if he’s going to be Finn anyway it won’t make a difference, Finn is popular and he would still possibly be Finn X anyway? If you love Finn just go for one of those, or one of the lots of lovely less used F names if you want a rarer name. I like Fintan a lot, Felix, Finnegan, Ferdinand (Ferdy), Fraser, Fenwick (Fennick, Fenn).

It's going to get shortened to Finn and he won't be the only one of those. You've strayed into trying to find a unique name and that way madness lies.

I haven't watched Hunger Games but there's another layer in that it sounds a bit Dickensian, and awkward and Finicky.

I met a baby Theon just after Game Of Thrones came out, and that blew my mind. I said, ooh Theon like Game of Thrones Theon?, she said yes, we were looking for something different and we really liked the name. That character is tragic, if I remember rightly, to the extent he got castrated. Inspirational.

Don't do it.

My mind jumps straight to The Hunger Games too - where lots of the names felt quite made-up. But then again, that is often how new names come into being. And I think that association with the Hunger Games will fade with time. I actually don’t mind it, and you are right - it will get shortened to Finn. It’s got me wondering how many little ones there are out there called Katniss!

Finnegan will always remind me of the puppet dog, Finnegan, from Mr. Dressup, which is fine, because he’s really quite lovable. But then there’s that horrible nursery rhyme:

There was a man named Michael Finnegan,
He grew whiskers on his chinnegan.
The wind came up and blew them inagain
Poor old Michael Finnegan.

So no, I wouldn’t go for that name either.

Finley or Finn is okay.

Finnick has a pretty sad story in the hunger games.

I'd go Fennec, like a Fennec fox, cos they are so beautiful. Similar sound, prettier, less finicky.

If you don't want your son to have the same name as other people in the class, you need to pick something that does not start with "Fin." Five of my friends had sons in the last year - three of them were called a "Fin-" name. It's done to death.

Adding unusual syllables to the end of the "Fin-" bit (Finbar? Finrad? Finton? Finlas?) is not going to work, because a) he'll be known as Fin anyway, and there will probably be at least one more in his class, b) after a while the Fin- names just blur into one anyway.

Finicky, it sounds like! I think it also sounds like a surname so they might have to keep correcting people. You could choose Finley Nicholas and use Finnick (and yes the auto correct changed it to Finicky!) as a nickname?

I don’t like it and I’ve never read the Hunger Games so didn’t know the association . I actually also don’t see how it will solve your dilemma as it will inevitably be shortened to Finn and it’s likely that there will be another Finn .
