Annie short for...?

We're not keen on double first names like Anna-Maria but looking for a nice way to have Annie as a NN.

DD1 has a longer name and is exclusively known by the NN so hoping for something similar. Any ideas?

A PP has already suggested it, but another vote for Marianne. So beautiful

Anne. I'm an Anne. Is definitely nicer and more unusual than Ann. However, I have experienced a life of it being misspelt as Ann.

I've only ever known Annie to be a nickname for the name Ann.

For me Ann/Anne is much nicer than any of the frilly longer 'Ann' names.

Wow some of these suggestions are convoluted. Leonie?! My choices would be

Anaglypta
Daniel
Anthony
Cannelloni
Ranunculus
Kanban
Kieran
Anaconda
Montana
Turban
Fan-Belt

Hahaha love this!!

I think Annie is fine as an official name but get you'd want a longer option.

Annabel and Marianne my faves.

I know an Anna whose parents call her Annie affectionately.

I'm an Anne, known as Annie.

JimNast · 15/06/2024 16:46

I like Savannah with Annie as a nn.
That one is convoluted.

It's a bit convoluted to choose a name like Annette, Annika, Anoushka etc so that the nickname can be Annie. They are all pet names for Anne. Just because they're longer it doesn't make them more 'proper'. It's like naming a kid Eliza so you can use the nickname Liz.

I think Ann/e/a is just about the only option. Everything else just feels like adding extra bits to Annie just so that you can take them off again. It's a lovely name and fine to use as is. The Victorians were quite happy to put 'pet' names like Annie, Jessie, Minnie, Kate etc on the birth certificate so I don't know why we continue to see it as somehow not the done thing.

CatWontBudge · 14/06/2024 12:20

I'm throwing Candida and Candace into the ring. Also Evangeline.

And to PPs who moan "just use Annie" the OP explained why she doesn't want to do that. Why not just answer her question and give suitable longer options or move on if her wishes are not to your taste?

I'm with OP, I think it's nice to have options for kids to make their own choices. But I absolutely understand people who use names such as Annie or Abbie or Katie in their own right. It's just personal taste isn't it, nobody needs to be wrong or talked down to.

Depends on DD1's name. For eg if your DD1 is Cassie short for Cassiopeia then go for a longer name for Annie like Antigone. If DD1 has a more common longer name like Cassie short for Cassandra, go for Annabel.

Seashor · 09/06/2024 16:03

We were going to shorten Antonia to Annie or Anna.
