Please tell me what you think of these names - which are chavvy

Emilia was good enough for Shakespeare!

Have always loved it and might have used it if Amelia hadn't been so popular. Plus most people don't take the time to actually see how the name is spelled, as I am learning from the misspellings of the very ordinary name we ended up giving dd.

All those names are lovely although not wild about Ruby. Agree that Jo need an 'e' if it's a boy.

How about Jonty short for Jonathan?

Personally I think none of them are chavvy. I would prefer to see Charles, Joseph, Tobias, William etc but I wouldn't hear any of the above names and think the parents must be chavvy.

My favouries are Finlay & Zachary & Amelia and Ruby is sweet too.

Joshua and Ruby would not be on my list (getting far too popular). And Joe would be spelt with an 'e' (and I also haven't ever heard of Amelia spelt with an 'E'). Other than that, no comment. None of the other names would look amiss at my son's prep school .

What does it take for name to become chavvy?

Does happen when chavvy people start using the name or when all non-chavvy people stop using the name?

If it's the first reason, then surely all names are chavvy (well, all those in the top 100 or so).

Monty - I don't like
Joshua - I like Joshua, but not Josh; very popular
Finlay - I quite like this and Finn but would never use as it is surname of Dsis's boyfriend
Charlie - I like this, but would have Charles as full name; getting very popular
Jo - I like Joseph a lot; Joe is the male shortening normally
Toby - OK
Alexander - not so keen but inoffensive
Will - I like William a lot, and the shortening WillZachary - like Zachary but not Zach

Ruby - I like
Katie - again I like but would have Katherine as the full name; very popular
Emilia - prefer Amelia or Amalie; shortened to Millie
Fenella - don't like this

Malory, Fenella sounds like the witch from Chorlton and the Wheelies.

Fenella sounds like a type of pasta.
On your list I like Alexander and Katie (Katherine) best.

None chavvy cos chav doesn't exist. Its just a concept to keep the so called lower classes away from others.

Feel for your favourite and call the child that.

None are chavvy imo.

Katie is lovely - especially if short for Katharine and can be shortened to Kate when older.
That's the only girls name I like on your list.

Of the boys names I only really like William.
Monty and Toby are like dogs names I think (although my boys' hairdresser is called Toby!).

Two poster have said there are loads of Fennellas. How strange, I have ever met one!

I like Joe and Alexander (best diminutive of this is Xan much less used than Xander) and Amelia the best of the girls. i do know loads of Rubys.

Jo - has to be spelt Joe for a boy and according to my 8yo all the naughty boys are called Joe
Toby - Cute. I like this one.
Alexander - Good strong name. Prefer the shortening Xander to Alex (Alex is very over-used here)
Will - Good strong name, but would definitely use William
Zachary - Love this. Not overly popular around here, and i love the shortened form Zac

Ruby - Lots and lots of Ruby's being born. Cute name. Very fashionable.
Katie - Love Katie. Versatile and can be called Kate as she grows.
Emelia - Looks like you can't spell
Fe nella - Very posh
Amelia - Like this, but again, verrrrry popular around these parts. Love the name Millie.

My favourites of your list are Zachary or William for a boy and Katie or Amelia (Millie) for a girl.

None of those names are really awful, and God knows I have heard some terrible names lately...

Joshua, Finlay and Zachary all seem a bit too "trendy" for my liking. I think that they will be chavvy before too long.

I like Joe and Alexander, and Will.

Toby is one of my best friends' names and we have noticed that a disturbing number of dogs are called Toby. It can be rather disconcerting to go to the park and hear your name yelled from every direction!

Amelia/Emilia are both great, but very common (one of them is my daughter's name).

Fenella makes me think of that girl in Riders (the Jilly Cooper novel) - not sure whether that is a plus or not.

I think Ruby is a bit... overused, although I do love it.

Katie is ok, although prefer Kate, as it is better for all ages IMO.

Monty - love this, and I would say a bit posh. I met a ruff woman in Wimbledon with a Monty but I'd still say posh. I'll call her a statistical anomoly

Ruby - Sorry, chav NOW. a Ten yr old Ruby is posh. Baby Ruby is chav.

Emelia - hmmm Emilia? or Amelia? OK.
Fe nella - Fenella. Interesting. I quite like this one.
Amelia - ok but Camellia like the flower is sounding a lot more intersting to me right now. def not chav tho
