Is it a bit 'Alfie', or is it in a different league?

We are still very keen on Finlay, and I really like Theo and Louis but hubby is keen to keep it Scottish.

Oh, and what would you favour - Finlay or Archie?

You couldn't rule out names for being characters!!

Finlay fire engine, rory car, barney dinosaur, Annabel the doll, Olivia the doll, milo the tweenie, max the tweenie,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

and on and on. Half your child's class will share his/her name with a fire engine or a doll.

Hehe MC, made me chuckle, I love the word bint - raises a smile every time!

Just researched (i'm very quick) - Fergus is both Scottish and Irish. I'll mention it to husband. He's so set on Finlay though(and I think it's still my fav. too), I think he'll rubbish any other suggestion.

Can't have Hamish.. there's one in the family already!

Ellen Jane, Finley will be a girls name in 20 yrs time. I love the name. But now, knowing what I know from visiting the American board and chatting to CK Evans on US Babycenter I wouldn't give the name to a boy.

I wouldn't give it to a girl on principle though!!! It makes me sad to say good names thrown casually to the girls.

DH is a Scot and liked Archie but as our surname is Scottish I said no. We live in England and I am English (of Irish heritage)so I didn't want ds to say his name and be asked "are you scottish?" all the time. I had a very recognisable Irish First name and Surname and it got a bit boring imho being asked "Are you Irish? You don't have an accent". I'm a miserable old bag though

PS a 15 yr old archie? coool. There was a man in the bank the other day called ARchie. Name badge. Really made me look twice. He must have been really unusual at school in the 70s and 80s!

I must say, I've never been fond of Archie...Calum, Angus and Alastair are all better Scottish boys' names to my mind (used to hate Alastair but Ali has really grown on me. Shame we could never use it ourselves due to a preponderance of Ls and Ns in our surnames).

I lOVE the name Finlay (we called our DS it).
We have a scottish family name so it they sound lovely together.
We shorten it to Finn and have only met a few boys with the same name-though spelt differently.
I think my DS really looks like a Finlay-have a look at profile photo.
Go for it!

Surley Finlay is just a regular name? It's not posh, but we don't want a posh name. My very snooty/fussy/opinionated friends (who are themselves parents, therefore know lots of children)think it's classy, and trust me, they would tell me if they were in any doubt!

Fergus is ok, but it's Irish!!

We have an Archie (Archibald) and love it! Have to say that it is a family name as my dad is Scottish but the Scottish just have such good boys names. Archie means 'very brave' so has a nice meaning as well.

I know several archies, so do think it's becoming more popular, if that bothers you.

I like all the other names, but prefer Finn to Finlay.
