Please help me pick a name for baby boy due in a few days time. We had picked another name, but suddenly changed our mind. Short list in no particular order is:

Oliver (but don’t really like Ollie!)
Arthur
George
Hugo
Kit
Patrick
Max
Alexander (again dont like Alex!)

Thanks!

Hugo is the new mumsnet favourite but I'm not keen. Still makes me think of braying Tory upper class twits. like the rest though.

lastminutebabyname · 08/05/2024 12:35

On Patrick - don’t mind Pat, not keen on Paddy!

Thank you! This is really helping. I think I need to cross off Alexander given the NN issue as many have said. I might be able to get over Ollie, so will leave Oliver on there for now and have a proper think over the next few days. Please keep the opinions coming!

Aww @RogueFemale that's a bit harsh, I know a lovely gormful Hugo! I think it's becoming loved because it's one of those 'ending in -o' names that are so popular.

I like Max best out of your list OP. Maxim and Maximilian are great, shortened to Max. I would have said Alexander but he is inevitably going to get called Alex at some point.

How about Rex or Alfred?

Needanewname42 · 08/05/2024 01:10

I don't follow politics that closely.
More Hugo Boss from the aftershave counter

RogueFemale · 08/05/2024 01:00

I'm amazed at recent Hugo love on this MN forum section. Hugo screams to me idiot Tory MP, with a gormless look and corduroy trousers.

Needanewname42 · 08/05/2024 00:07

You have a good list. Bin the ones you don't like the nicknames off. You can't control what other people shorten names to.
So that leaves
Arthur
George
Hugo

Kit - sounds very trendy and like a nickname so I'd bin it.

Patrick - Do you like Pat / Paddy / Ricky? If any of them cause your toes to curl bin.

Max

I think my preferences are Hugo, or Max.

sarahsunny · 07/05/2024 23:58

I'd go with Patrick or Max.
The others are either waaaay overdone (Arthur, Oliver, George) or not as nice sounding to me (Hugo). I wouldn't pick a name the very common nickname of which you don't like.

salamithumbs · 07/05/2024 23:51

I like all of them apart from Hugo (not sure why, just sounds pretentious to my ears!) My favourite is probably Max.
I wouldn't go for Alexander if you don't like Alex as I really think it would end up shortened...Oliver might be safe from Ollie but Alexander is that bit longer!

CaraDeLaVagine · 07/05/2024 23:46

Oliver (but don’t really like Ollie!) me neither
Arthur no
George no
Hugo like it but many perceive it to be too posh
Kit love it
Patrick no
Max yes
Alexander (again don't like Alex!) Xander?

shoopshoopdedoo · 07/05/2024 23:43

Love George, Alexander, Patrick and Oliver. Agree that it might be hard to lose the common shortenings, especially for Oliver.

BoleynMemories13 · 07/05/2024 20:20

Personally I'd advise against Oliver and Alexander if you don't like the most common shortenings. They might choose to go by them when they're older.

George and Arthur are my favourites from the rest. I quite like Kit too.

Max is ok but I'm not keen on Patrick or Hugo.

stopringingme · 07/05/2024 17:27

I like

Patrick
Arthur
George
Hugo

Not keen on he rest

Svolvaer · 07/05/2024 17:21

Sunnnybunny72 · 07/05/2024 16:28

Only like Alexander.
Definitely not Kit.

🤣🤣my son is Kit, I love it!

That would be my first choice from that list, second choice Hugo.

Sunnnybunny72 · 07/05/2024 16:28

Only like Alexander.
Definitely not Kit.

urbanbuddha · 07/05/2024 16:01

Patrick or Arthur

TrueStoryDude · 07/05/2024 15:22

If you don’t like Ollie or Alex then I would avoid as he’s bound to be called that at school and you can’t control what other kids call him.

I know soooo many George’s it’s so popular.

TeamPolin · 07/05/2024 14:26

Kit
Patrick
Alexander are my favs. All great names

Arthur and Max are OK

George is meh.

LOATHE Hugo....

AmberGuide · 07/05/2024 14:20

Planning on naming my son Christopher nn Kit (if he's a boy, that is!) so I love that one haha! If you like Kit but not Christopher, I think Kit is fine as a full name but if you wanted it as a nickname, you could always go the Beckett route instead.

Alternatively I like Patrick, and you could maybe go Alec instead of Alex as a nn for Alexander if you like that better?

Theoldwoman · 07/05/2024 13:37

George

CuttingAllTheFlowersStill · 07/05/2024 12:45

George or Patrick are my favourites or Kit as a NN.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 07/05/2024 12:37

I have an Alexander but also don’t like Alex. He’s still a baby but so far have been using Xander or Xandy (affectionate name that I only say to him) for short although most of the time still just use Alexander especially outside of our family. On the odd occasion someone has referred to him as Alex it feels weird and not like his name so I hope either full name or Xander sticks

JimPansy · 07/05/2024 11:55

Max - great
George - fine

Hugo - nice but too trendy
Arthur - too popular, Arfur
Kit - too trendy, too nicknamey

Patrick - do you like Pat & Paddy?
Alexander (you dont like Alex, he could be Al, Xan, Xander, Sandy, Sascha)
Oliver (You don’t really like Ollie)

Mumofgirls2017 · 07/05/2024 10:59

Kit!

alexander, Arthur or Patrick second choice
