Looking for some thoughts on the name Blair please?

And if possible some suggestions of names similar, preferably one syllable and with an American unisex vibe.

Thanks x

I knew a Blaire many years ago. It's a very dashing, stylish name imo.

I like it for a girl. Reminds me of the daughter in Christmas with the Kranks. Also like Jamie & Stevie for a girl.

I also like Blaine.

I suddenly thought of the movie, "Pretty in Pink".

"Blaine? His name is Blaine. That's a major appliance, that's not a name!"

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 07/05/2024 01:06

Blair is Scottish of Gaelic origin - not American

Other Scottish one syllable unisex names are

Blaine / Blane
Blake

Bryce

Curious as to why you'd want an American unisex vibe? Is it logic or 'feeling' (if latter, the logic of the feeling)?

FineWordsButterNoParsnips · 07/05/2024 00:36

I like it, but only if it’s pronounced as it’s spelled, and not as ‘bleh’

Newcrocs · 07/05/2024 00:36

It's a girls name for me, Blair Waldorf and also the daughter in Christmas with the Kranks is called Blair and I always think of Jamie Lee Curtis shouting BLAIRRRR when Blair calls from the airport 🤣

I only thought of Tony and witch when I read more comments.

Don't like it for a boy though, prefer Blake or Blaine.

Other suggestions (shortish)

Cooper
Brodie

Brady
Toby

I would go with Blair though 😀

MavisPennies · 06/05/2024 23:22

I think associations like Tony Blair and Blair witch project only really matters for how older people will think about the kids name. For his/her contemporaries the main association will be the child themselves. I don't like it but if you do you should choose it. Have confidence in your own decision and ignore what others think.

JimPansy · 06/05/2024 23:17

Lionel

As a first name Blair is OK for a boy, but IMO only if you have a rhotic accent.
It sounds like Blare. Blake is nicer.

cheapskatemum · 06/05/2024 22:42

I also like Blaine.

cheapskatemum · 06/05/2024 22:42

I love it & it's DS3's name. We named him when John Smith was leader of the Labour Party & then the tragedy happened. Fast forward 3 years & we had a son with the same name as the Prime Minister. Everyone called him Tony. He got very fed up with it. However, now he likes the fact that it's not common in England and people tend to remember him because of that.
