Not long to go now so time to post a baby name thread. Top 5 boys are Eli, Sebastian, Gianluca (Luca) Giacomo & Leonardo (Leo) (not Italian but baby conceived in Sardinia!). Top 5 girls are Rohanne, Cecily, Genevieve (prob shorten to Eve), Maeve & Bridie. No idea if baby is pink or blue so need to have one of each. Off work for a couple of days now with bad back so could do with some chuckles from you witty MNers! Let rip ladies, promise no offence will be taken! PS I love Queenie but DP disapproves. Is he right?

Now I am anglo italian with a very italian surname but still thought long and hard and decided not to go for an italian name for my 2 boys.

Most people cannot pronounce names correctly and they usually sound a bit rubbish said in any english accent.

I appreciate how difficult it is to find something unique but we need to be kind to our little ones.

Sebastian is by far the best IMO for a boy and if I'm honest not with you on any of the girls names.

A great italian name for a girly which is not too out there is Lucia - which is pronounced loocheea. That was going to be my babes name if I had a girl.

queenie is an absolutely brilliant name.

why not leonard vicsta (are you english?) then can keep leo and also a nice traditional name.

Genevieve and Sebastian are both lovely 'proper' names and shorten to two really cute pet names - Evie and Seb.

Queenie is horrible and makes me think of a chain-smoking cockney pensioner droning on about WWII.....

Luca, leo, Cecily, Eve all very nice indeed. Maeve, like others have said, I think will become increasingly used and as with Bridie, I can't decide if I really like it or really, really dislike it.

My favourites are Luca and Cecily I think.

Rohan is also a brand of deeply hideous trousers for people who think drip dry, more than two zips and lots of pockets makes the perfect pair of trousers.

I know a little Gianni and Guiseppe...and they are both gorgeous, but they are also half italian, which is why they got those names

Whatever you do, dont go for Rohanne for a girl, it is hideous. Also, Rohan is an Asian boys name, easy confusion.

The pronounciation thing is a bugger! I've posted before about what happens to Ethan and Seth at out Kentins primary school, but I had forgotten that I sadly rejected Lily for our dd when I thought about dp's Yorkshire family saing it! We called her Grace, and I love the way they say that.

Do you live in a part of the country where the local accents could cope? If so, lovely Italian names may be mangled a bit...

Sorry to anyone with a regional accent. I personally love the Brummie and Geordie accents but can you imagine "Giacomo" wrapped around those tongues?

Mrs Mattie, I think you're right that Maeve could be on the increase. It seems surprisingly popular with Americans on the girls names board on American Babycenter. It's not going to be in the top ten though!

Like Eli, but would name him Elijah and just use Eli as shortening.
Also like Sebastien.
Gianluca will always be a footballer to me.
Leonardo will always be a baby faced actor.
Giacomo too Italian.

Like Cecily and Genevieve, and sort of like Bridie, but don't think I could bring myself to use it.

Love love love Cecily for a girl. But don't do what my dad did. He was in such a flap registering my sister that he wrote it down wrong and registered my dear sister as Cecil.

remember that if your child has a lisp and you call it cecily it won't be able to say its own name properly!

But Luca is too popular these days! There are two Lucas at my son's nursery and one at his toddler group, and none of them are even bleedin' Italian!

Maeve also set for major popularity, you mark my words. It'll be like Niamh / Neve in a few years time.

Not that popularity bothers most people...but I do quite like unusual names...

p.s. still rooting for Queenie for a girl!

named my DD Sienna after the Italian city Siena and we do totally enjoy remembering that connection, despite the awful "oh like Sienna Miller" comments ...
