Mungo: Cool or cruel?

My friend was going to call her baby Rollo if it was a boy. Thankfully it was a girl.

I think Mungo is quite normal compared to Rollo! It's all relative.

my dd's best friend's little brother is called Mungo.
his mum is lovely, slightly alternative and slightly on another planet in a Toast-wearing kind of way (the catalogue not the food), and after my initial "woah! Mungo!" reaction I think it is fine. In the context of the family he is in. And none of his friends seem to have a problem with it.

Mungo Jerry was kind of cool after all....

Well if you love it, go for it. It isn't cruel, certainly, although it isn't everyone's first choice (as seen by the answers to this thread!)

Cos otherwise, people are watching what they say, and that's not what the OP wanted. She wanted honesty!

I've had my son's name mocked on the US board and I kuddnee give a rrrats.

I'm surprised that some respected MNers feel it's ok to keep saying these things when a MNer has told us it's her son's name.

I do not like the sound of the name and it makes me think of a)the charity for homeless people called St Mungo's and b) the 1970s children's TV prog. 'Mary, Mungo and Mitch'

I don't think anyone was suggesting you'd prefix the name with Saint. Why on earth would you do that?

I know one Mungo--a jazz piano player and footballer. Very nimble on his feet. And not one bit pretentious.

I've never understood St Mungo. It sounds like the name of a dog food. Not his fault, obviously.

Am neither pretentious nor cruel nor nepotistic (word?)and would have named my DDs Mungo had either of them been a boy.

I am Scottish but live in France, and it was my French husband who came up with the name Mungo. I love it. We asked both our French and Scottish families what they thought (due to it being a very old fashioned name) and they all liked Mungo. As it turned out both DCs were girls and ended up as Ella and Rose, both simple common names.

If you like it, go for it. I would love to think that there is a Mungo out there somewhere!

We read up on the history of Saint Mungo (we used to live in Glasgow) and that only convinced us even more that we love the name. If we ever have a DS (unlikely) we would still go for Mungo (even after reading this thread!!!!).

My labradoodle is called Mungo - well I don't have one yet, DS and DD are still working on DH to get one but that is what DD wants to call it - DS wants to call it Elvis!
