A name like Jane, but not Jane.

And by like Jane, I don't mean Jenna or Joan or Jake!

I mean that sort of name. A simple, old fashioned, pretty, girl's name.

Kate or Clara? Annie? Alice? I think that's the sort of name I mean, but I can't think of the right one.

Something beginning with C or K would work well.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mum just caught a quick look and said do not name your child Joan its horrible.

Although she could be biased as she hate her name (can you guess what it is ).

What about Jayne. But i think others have given lot of good suggestions. FWIW our dd's are called the only 2 names we could agree on.
Both are classic names.

wot's rong wiv Jane?

Lots of good names here - I think if I ever have children I'll choose this type of name. Classic and (hopefully) long-lasting!

I must say, I do prefer the Tara pronunciation...but then the Clara I know is half-German and has that pronunciation. Well, actually her mum used to pronounce it Clava with a comedy German accent, but that's by the by

totalmisfit · 30/03/2008 17:17

How about Lucy or Sarah or Victoria?

good solid english names!

claraquitetirednow · 30/03/2008 17:12

I am Clara but every time this name pops up on MN (which seems quite frequent these days - I have only known a handful in my life but perhaps it's coming back into fashion) I have to warn people that it can be mis-pronounced. I am Clara like Clare - with an a. Most people pronounce it to rhyme with Tara. It does my head in...

I expect most people think of it like Tara though.

Some fab inspiration here.

I like Lily very much, and Lilith even more. Dp not sure about Lilith though.

May or Mae is good too and could work.

I hadn't thought of Louise...

I'm called Alice and I always thought it was very old fashioned, so if you want an old fashioned name, there you go.

I've never disliked it though and I like it because it is short, but not too short; spellable; unusual, but not too unusual; feminine but not too girly.

If dc2 had been a girl she would have been Kate, and it is still my girl name of choice.

SugarSkyHigh · 30/03/2008 11:26

Grace?

simple, old fashioned, sort of like Jane but not Jane

alfiesbabe · 30/03/2008 11:26

Clara, Alice and Kate are all lovely traditional names, which sound feminine but strong, and work as well on an adult as on a baby . Always a good test!! Also like Emily, Rachel, Sarah, Helen.
