A name like Jane, but not Jane.

And by like Jane, I don't mean Jenna or Joan or Jake!

I mean that sort of name. A simple, old fashioned, pretty, girl's name.

Kate or Clara? Annie? Alice? I think that's the sort of name I mean, but I can't think of the right one.

Something beginning with C or K would work well.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mabel and Matilda are really lovely. I especially think Tilda- as for Tilda Swinton is a nice shortening. I very nearly used it for DD but I really wanted my Nana's name, Mary for the middle name as she was such a lovely lady, and I thought Matilda Mary might be too milly molly mandy-ish - but I still quite like it.

I saw someone has already posted that they are called Alice and really like it!! ... me too! It's feminine but also strong. It would be my favourite girls name if I wasn't called it

I know what you mean about the name Jane. I really like the simple but strong names. John is much the same (not for a girl obviously). How about Ann (rather than Annie) or Sarah. Or Ruth?

Emily Rose - a friend just had a baby and I think her name is lovely.
I really liked Rosie but someone in the family got in before me!

Joan- I have an aunt called Joan. I like it- it sounds slightly bohemian
Phoebe is lovely- our cat is called Phoebe and she's really pretty, it shortens well, my mum calls her Fe which I like

btw can i just say- when our Clara was born 2 years ago NOBODY called their baby that and now every other baby girl is called Clara. am a bit upset

i forgot my favorite, Matilda. also really like Victoria. In fact if i had my way i would call dd either Matilda Rosa or Anna Victoria. but dh not keen. he likes Leonie or Leona. over my dead body.

dd is called Clara (as in Tara), but we're italian/german. i think it's the best name ever. second best name ever is Sofia and i am kicking myself for chosing it as her middle name as we are now expecting dd2 in a couple of weeks and struggling.

What about this as a beautiful old english girls name - one everyone knows but you never hear children called this.

I quite like the whole Lilith thing - got thrown out of Eden because she was headstrong. You go girl!

Ooooh, I'd forgotten about Dora, I really like it (if you disassociate from Explorer connections!!)

I know a little girl called Maude (French-speaking parents). Didn't like it at first but has grown on me ....

Polly, Annabel and Celia are all quite 'simple' but quite elegant at the same time.

Also, I like Faith more than Faye, and I like Maeve more than May.

My 'Ruth' is a traditional, but surprisingly uncommon name.
I've only ever known a couple of others.

My DD is Anna Mary.

I also love the name Poppy, among others.

I think they are all simple names, but definitely not plain names.
