A name like Jane, but not Jane.

And by like Jane, I don't mean Jenna or Joan or Jake!

I mean that sort of name. A simple, old fashioned, pretty, girl's name.

Kate or Clara? Annie? Alice? I think that's the sort of name I mean, but I can't think of the right one.

Something beginning with C or K would work well.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also short for Margaret are Maisie, Meg, Megan, Peggy, Rita, Gretal, Greta, Margie, Maggie, Margo, Margi, Madge, Margory, Pearl etc..
I think Elizabeth and Margaret and possibly Catherine give the largest number of options, maybe because they have all been so popular for so long.

We went for Ruth, despite not being at all "Biblical" people and there are definitely not many of those around.

TwoFirTreesToday · 03/04/2008 13:43

I thought Kitty was short for Katherine, and Kit short for Christopher/ina names?

Daisy is short for Margaret because the Latin for daisy is Margurite (sp?)

hotchocscot · 03/04/2008 01:48

Longer classic names with lots of diminutives are good, because then your DD can sort of choose for herself as she gets older (ie a Catherine can be Cathy, Kate, Katie, Kitty, Cat... Elizabeth can be Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Betty, Bess... Margaret can be (apparently) Daisy as well as Maggie, Mags, Meg, Peggy or Greta.)

How about Shirley
Hilary
Carol
Violet
Jean

barnstaple · 03/04/2008 00:07

Also Caroline

You could do worse than looking in the Bible; it's full of those sort of names.

Joash · 03/04/2008 00:06

Both my DD's names are on here, plus mine, my MIL's and my younger sisters - not sure if that means our names are popular or common

Clary · 03/04/2008 00:05

enid that's the first time I've seen my MN name on a thread

Watch out for Hannah and Rose - very popular round here.

How about Helen
Sarah
Anna
Karen???

Have now read through - I am glad lots of people like my DD's name (and MamaG you can't use it for your DC3, but only because you already knew what a good name it is ).

Rosbo · 03/04/2008 00:01

In my DS's class, theres a girl called Shareigh. What does everyone think of that name? I'd never heard it before.

BTW everyone I found out earlier today...

I'm pregnant! will be my 5th

IdrisTheDragon · 03/04/2008 00:00

Have only read the first reponse, but it includes my first and middle name, my sister's first and middle name, and my DD's name .

Joash · 02/04/2008 23:57

I quite like Jayne, ALice and one or two others on here though

Joash · 02/04/2008 23:57

Be careful with Charlotte, Chloe, Ruby, Mia and Hannah - all very common around here.

Ellbell · 02/04/2008 23:54

Sorry PeggySioux, haven't read whole thread, but just had to post in case no-one has yet suggested Ellen.
