I am due soon with our first DS and we are having such a hard time choosing a name. He will have 2 sisters who have quite classic names, nothing too unusual.

Our shortlist (in no order)
Edward (nn Teddy/Ted/Eddie)
Casper

Hugo

What do you think of these names? Any other suggestions?

Thank you!

Love Edward but not with the nn Teddy.
love Casper and cass is very cool.
not keen on Hugo.

Edward is great. I like the apparrently controversial Ned shortening the best. That and Edmund were on our shortlist for ds2.

daffodilfan · 08/04/2024 10:27

Edward/Hugo - both fine.

I can't imagine my 26 year old son wanting to introduce himself as Casper but I'm a bit old fashioned.

lavenderjump · 08/04/2024 10:23

Edward or Hugo! Both classic lovely names.
Casper reminds me of the friendly ghost.

SorcererGaheris · 08/04/2024 10:14

I do like Edward, but like Edmund even more (favourite character in The Chronicles of Narnia.)

Other suggestions:

Peter
Benjamin
Andrew/Andy
George
John
Robin
Gareth
Lucas
Francis

You can name your son Jarkeydius , Cornelius , Viktor , Darron, Daz , Beckett , Memphis , Riggins , River , Hunter , Remington , Sawyer , Hendrix , Hudson , Oakland , Chesny, Cov , Chick-fil-a, Masala , Orlando , Tikka and Jenson.

MissedItByThisMuch · 06/04/2024 03:03

Like Edward and Hugo (like Hugh even better). Not so keen on Casper/Caspar. PPS have made some good suggestions - I also think Richard is a “Royal” classic due a comeback.

DramaAlpaca · 06/04/2024 02:52

From your list, Edward. I'd use Eddie as the diminutive. I thoroughly dislike Teddy.

Geppili · 06/04/2024 02:41

Edward

Theoldwoman · 06/04/2024 02:10

Edward.

Depending on sisters names:

Francis
Caleb
Benjamin
Luca
George
Adam
Jeremy

Ivo

Felix
Barnaby
Edmund

I like the three names you're considering.

Edward with NN Teddy would be lovely.
I like Hugo a little more than Caspar, but you can't go wrong with any of the three imo.

NewName24 · 06/04/2024 00:41

Like most, it seems, I like Edward. Though I don't like Ted or Teddie.

But I don't like Hugo or Casper.

If you want 'classic', what about
James
Charles
Alexander
George
Henry
David
Andrew
Peter
Robert

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/04/2024 23:49

I had Edward on my own list btw - along with similar classics:
Alexander
William
James
Thomas
Samuel
Nathaniel
Michael
Maximilian/Max
Hugh (not Hugo)

Apart from Hugh and possibly Max and Michael, they are all pretty timeless ( hard to guess ages) and backgrounds I think.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/04/2024 23:43

Edward! If in doubt between multiple names if you like them the same - I generally say go for the most classic, timeless option ( especially if siblings have also got similarly classic names - I might go for Hugo or Casper if sisters were more unusual Persephone and Octavia for example as Edward might sound a bit boring in comparison).

Casper and Hugo are also very trendy now - especially Hugo. Plus I’d have no idea what age or background an Edward was and that can be a real benefit as he grows older.

SE13Mummy · 05/04/2024 22:34

I love Edward, with Ted or Ned as nicknames. Henry, Gabriel and Reuben are other names I think are along the same lines.

Lifeinlists · 05/04/2024 22:21

@Moreteaandchocolate you obviously like Samuel as you've typed it twice! But I can only agree with youWink Great name!
I like nearly all your other suggestions too.
I think I'd add William to the list.

DearSilverGirl · 05/04/2024 22:19

How about Laurence (Laurie)?

InferiorDesign · 05/04/2024 22:17

Edward is my least favourite of those, just cos I think Teddy is overdone

i like:

Freddie
Conrad
simon

SkaneTos · 05/04/2024 22:15

They are all great names!
My favourite would be Casper.

Teentaxidriver · 05/04/2024 22:13

Hugo also rare

Teentaxidriver · 05/04/2024 22:13

Love Hugo too - such a classic name

Teentaxidriver · 05/04/2024 22:12

Love Edward shortened to Ned, might that work?

CallMikeBanning · 05/04/2024 22:10

I don't like Teddy or Hugo or Casper so we probably have different tastes but how about
Anthony or Alistair.
