What do you think about Chanel? Is it too chavvy or is it a respectable name? I think it sounds beautiful but I’m not sure what others might think. Is this name too tied to the luxury brand? I know there’s parents these days naming their kids ridiculous things like Gucci though.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It's a surname, so in that respect no "worse" in terms of provenance or "legitimacy" than, say, Bailey or Ryan or Madison or Taylor. Or Gucci. If it's a family name, I wouldn't necessarily be put off of using it, but otherwise it might be heavily associated with one specific family that's not yours.

Chanel Miller is the name of the US author who went viral on BuzzFeed outing herself as the plaintiff in the infamous Stanford Rape case after the convicted rapist got a slap on the wrist, and then wrote a best-selling memoir about her ordeal. She has a sister called Tiffany.

It’s association is far more luxury brand than surname, especially as it would be a v unusual surname in the UK

So it’s like calling your kid Gucci or Dolce and thinking it sounds sophisticated when in fact it is the opposite.

Only if it's baby No. 5.

😁

It’s no different to Gucci

And I hate the c word but those that use it would certainly use it in this case.

It’s a terrible thing to inflict on a child

IWishYouWouldJust · 19/03/2024 07:46

I think that to some people it cons across as aspirational and artless.

To others it would seem very sophisticated.

breakfastdinnerandtea · 19/03/2024 07:43

I knew a Chanel growing up (and also a Chanelle). I couldn't bear either of them so I guess that's swaying my decision, but I think it's an awful name. I think it sounds ugly. The one spelled Chanel got a lot of "channel" pronunciations too.

crew2022 · 19/03/2024 06:03

Please don't.

benjoin · 19/03/2024 05:59

It's fine but it is like calling a child George at Asda

Tilllly · 19/03/2024 05:56

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/03/2024 01:09

Only if it's baby No. 5.

😂😂😂
👏🏻

No OP, I think it's awful

And they'd spend their whole life getting comments

WandaWonder · 19/03/2024 05:35

What about Armani, Argos, Prada?

DirtyDensDog · 19/03/2024 05:19

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/03/2024 01:09

Only if it's baby No. 5.

Brilliant

LauderSyme · 19/03/2024 03:02

I think it does attract too many negative social stereotypes, unfortunately, because it is a pretty sounding name.

AliceMcK · 19/03/2024 02:41

Sorry makes me think about the movie Boy with Chardoney, Dallas and Dynasty.

MariaVT65 · 19/03/2024 02:39

My honest answer is that I would assume chav.

AllTheChaos · 19/03/2024 02:37

I mean, at least you aren’t trying to spell it “Channel” (yes there was one!) TBH, it sounds like a fake name used by someone for their character at a strip club etc. (I knew a lass who worked at such a club and she made a fortune, but she did not use her own name, she used something like this instead)

peaceinourtime · 19/03/2024 02:17

I knew one in my year at school, I’m in my mid thirties. It was fine, she never got any comments or nothing. It’s a pretty name when you think about it.

WrongSortOfPoster · 18/03/2024 23:39

It's popular where I live. That's not a recommendation BTW.

Not sure whether they all spell it Chanel. I think some might be Shanelle.

Edited

Shanelle is a different name.

OP, Chanel is the epitome of tacky names. Definitely as bad as Gucci or Versace. Chardonnay is the only one worse (because as well as being tacky you are naming your child after a bottle of alcohol).

RogueFemale · 19/03/2024 00:27

Chav name, though they'd probably spell it wrong.

Floralnomad · 19/03/2024 00:26

Very tacky

Berlinlover · 19/03/2024 00:22

I know a Chanelle in her 40s. It’s a bit trashy though.

TerriPie · 19/03/2024 00:20

Chavvy, sorry!

CryptoFascist · 19/03/2024 00:18

No.

AdaColeman · 19/03/2024 00:00

Pyrex if it's a boy!
