What do you think about Chanel? Is it too chavvy or is it a respectable name? I think it sounds beautiful but I’m not sure what others might think. Is this name too tied to the luxury brand? I know there’s parents these days naming their kids ridiculous things like Gucci though.

Chanel - right up (or down) there with Waynetta.😙

TheBirdintheCave · 19/03/2024 11:52

@SKG231 In defense of poor Tiffany, it's actually an ancient name! 😅

@Andrea279 its so chavvy.

Its also French for canal, water way. Not exactly pretty.

If you like the way it sounds, why not use something more unique like Shanelle or Channelle that gives the same sound on the tongue but isn't directly naming your child after a brand founded by a Nazi informant.

Think of future proofing the name as well. Brands sometimes get cancelled (Marchesa due to Weinstein, Balenciaga due to child sex trafficking etc) and you wouldn't want your precious child with a name linked to something awful.

Taylormiffed · 19/03/2024 10:54

No.
Do you remember the parrot that went missing?

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 19/03/2024 10:53

Chavvy as a chavvy thing on a chavvy day.

And no different for most people than Gucci, Armani, Prada or Chardonnay. Stereotypes all the way but it's true. People will think worse of her (and you) for an awful name. That's just human nature.

WettyBite · 19/03/2024 10:52

I know a Chanel who is in her late twenties now. I think it’s an awful name, sorry.

We considered Portia as a potential name as it was a relative's name.
I know an Amani - it's a muslim name, I think.

But Portia is an entirely different name to Porsche! And Amani to Armani!

BoohooWoohoo · 19/03/2024 10:44

Chanel is no different to Gucci or Prada- even if you change the spelling to something like Chanelle.

It makes me think of names like Chardonnay and Armani (which I heard in a shop 👀 )

Well, latin Americans do this all the time. I know a Cuban Chanel. I also know an Ecuadorian Milton who got called this, not after the poet, but the brand name of a baby bottle disinfecting method, the Milton method. And so on and so forth. I wouldn´t do it, as to me it sounds like you are trying to appear something you are not.

SKG231 · 19/03/2024 10:21

Awful, tacky and chavvy.

along the same lines as Coco, Porsha, Tiffany

WrongSortOfPoster · 19/03/2024 10:17

Emmanesse sounds good. Might use it. St Michael for a boy though.

WrongSortOfPoster · 19/03/2024 10:14

@Saschka , The name Shanelle is an alternative spelling of Chanel.
If I was in a shop and someone calls out a name, I don't really care how it's spelt.

DrJoanAllenby · 19/03/2024 10:13

I know a bulldog called Chanel.

DillDanding · 19/03/2024 10:00

Dreadful. Don’t do it.

pontipinemum · 19/03/2024 09:59

No sorry. Chantel/ Chardonnay are just as bad IMO.

Fuck sake 🤣🤣

LittleBearPad · 18/03/2024 22:39

It is no different to Gucci, which you consider ridiculous.

This. It's exactly the same as Gucci, a family surname strongly linked in the public mind to a luxury brand.

TheBirdintheCave · 19/03/2024 09:35

I don't think that's the best idea. Not least of all as Chanel is such a well known brand. To me it would be akin to calling a child Tesco.

Gabrielle was the designer's actual given name.

FloofCloud · 19/03/2024 09:30

I picture a toddler in a Burberry shell suit and high heels carrying fake Gucci bag - it's a no from me

NashvilleQueen · 19/03/2024 09:24

Really randomly I was just behind someone with the name Chanel at a Starbucks this morning and the young man on the counter didn't know how to spell it (and for some reason didn't ask her). His older female colleague rolled her eyes and said 'you spell it as it sounds' and wrote Chanel but I wondered whether it was in fact Chanelle and she should have checked. Anyway she will have a lifetime of spelling it for people.

No. And again no.

Coco on the other hand is cool AF.
