Louis Vs Louie

I'm really liking this boys name, however my husband is dyslexic and cannot get his head around the more traditional Louis spelling because he just thinks it should be said like Lewis. He suggested spelling it Lewie but I'm not a fan
What are people's thoughts on Louie instead, is that quite usual and won't be considered 'wrong?'

I would use Louis, the same as the prince. A lovely name!

Teddleshon · 10/03/2024 06:36

100% Louis

Mumofone2024 · 10/03/2024 06:28

I like Louie, and much prefer it to Lewie
I do agree if it’s Louis he will forever get Lewis

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 10/03/2024 06:12

If you attend to live outside the uk at anyooibt then use Louie. In the us/germany//netherlands etc Louis is prounounced as Lewis.

if staying in uk Louis is nicer and should be pronounced as Lou-ee

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 10/03/2024 05:54

Louis. Never heard it pronounced Lewis as it is a fairly popular name, including the Royal Family.
I wouldn’t know how to pronounce Louie to be honest! And the kid will always have to spell it out to people.

Toblerbone · 10/03/2024 05:33

Louis

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/03/2024 05:30

I work with a Louis (loo-ey). He says that the it has largely been pronounced properly since the Prince was born.

Zonder · 10/03/2024 04:02

Louis.

Firstly it's the original spelling, used by the prince, Louis Armstrong, Louis Vuitton and Louis Theroux, so not uncommon.

Secondly people will make mistakes somehow whatever name you use. You just stick with it. Lots of names can be spelled different ways so people choose how they want it done.

MiltonNorthern · 10/03/2024 03:56

Louis.
louie if you must but please never lewie. Makes you look illiterate.

Outthedoor24 · 10/03/2024 01:49

I'm with your DH Louis reads the same as Lewis, I'd go Louie or Loui if I wanted an ie / i / y sounding end.

Or pick something else completely.

FirstFallopians · 10/03/2024 01:40

Louis 100%

You might get people assuming it’s pronounced Lewis, but you’ll only need to ask them to use the correct pronunciation once, especially with Prince Louis knocking about.

Anglicised spellings of foreign names are a pet peeve for me, so Louie and Lewie just give me the ick.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 10/03/2024 01:36

I prefer Louis but I’ve seen is spelled Louie plenty of times. I don’t think it would be considered wrong.

Babla · 10/03/2024 01:27

Louis all day long

MaloneMeadow · 10/03/2024 00:08

I prefer Louis but you certainly will get people giving it the Louie pronunciation from time to time

Well that’s how it’s said, so..

Quaversss · 10/03/2024 00:15

Louis definitely. Gorgeous name

MaloneMeadow · 10/03/2024 00:08

I prefer Louis but you certainly will get people giving it the Louie pronunciation from time to time

theduchessofspork · 10/03/2024 00:06

Louis

It’s a popular name anyway but especially because of Prince Louis I don’t think anyone won’t get it

NewName24 · 09/03/2024 23:57

Although Louis is more traditional (and many will say "correct"), they will get lots of people saying "Lewis"
I've known two people who wanted their child to have their name said as 'Lewis' who then registered them as 'Louis' and I've heard lots of people reading 'Louis' as Lewis.

For some reason I don't understand, I do think 'Louie' looks better than Lewie, but I think he'd go through life with people writing 'Louis' when he gives them his name, so I don't think he'll win whichever you decide.

SwedishEdith · 09/03/2024 23:38

Louis.

WorkingLateAgain · 09/03/2024 23:37

I don’t like Louie or Lewis. I’d go with Louis. I’ve never known anyone pronounce it as Lewis. It’s reasonably common so I think people know how to pronounce it.

Howmanysleepsnow · 09/03/2024 23:36

My default would be Louis, but certainly where I live Louie is normal. All 3 I know are spelt Louie.
