How would you pronounce Violet. I say Vi O Let but have lots of friends saying Vi Let

Um .. maybe I’ve written it wrong but I pronounce it the same as you! 🫤

I know, but you've said it's the only way, when it clearly isn't.

It demonstrably isn't the only way, as a glance at the thread will tell you. Grin

I say vigh(uh)luht, like violence as someone else said. Never heard a pronunciation with the O stressed.

Like violent but without the t. Generally does just have 3 syllables but only just. Could drop down to 2 depending on the day. Definitely an "uh" sound that doesn't require you to move your mouth or your tongue, not an O sound.

kitsuneghost · 03/03/2024 22:16

Vi lit

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 03/03/2024 22:15

Sorry just said it a few times to myself and I say it more like Vi luht

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 03/03/2024 22:14

I pronounce it Vi Let (could be a regional thing?) I'm West Midlands

SoOutingWhoCares · 03/03/2024 22:07

Riverlee · 03/03/2024 21:44

Vi - O -lit

Seriously?!

Vi O lit?!

O as in Oh? and with an emphasis on the middle syllable?!

I have never heard that pronunciation...it seems very odd!

Vi-let (Scottish)

RuthW · 03/03/2024 21:40

Vi-lut

DuesToTheDirt · 03/03/2024 20:29

Agreed. I've never heard anyone say Vi O Let.

I think they mean the ‘o’ is a schwa. As someone else said, like ‘violence’.

Spendonsend · 03/03/2024 21:21

vye-lt (south east)

SoOutingWhoCares · 03/03/2024 21:21

VI-lut.

Vi as in vile.

43ontherocksporfavor · 03/03/2024 21:19

Let? Really?

ILoveSalmonSpread · 03/03/2024 21:18

Vye-o-let.
It's the only way.

43ontherocksporfavor · 03/03/2024 21:17

Vee-oh-lay is the colour purple in French( spelling as the name) so is that that how you mean to pronounce it? Or as in the instrument, Viola?

Toottooot · 03/03/2024 21:15

Vile-it

HemlockSoup · 03/03/2024 21:14

vye-lut

YourLocal · 03/03/2024 21:14

Veye let (Violet) idk who says vee o let? We call my son’s friend he went to nursery with Vi but she’s call Violet (VEYE LET NOT VEE O LET!!)

fatphalange · 03/03/2024 21:11

I get all the above answers, the only thing I don't like is when someone omits the 't' at the end

Sandysandwich · 03/03/2024 21:06

Viah-lut
Viah rhyming with Higher

Clearinguptheclutter · 03/03/2024 21:06

FayCarew · 03/03/2024 20:40

@WhoaJayShettybambalam , but how do you say Viola. It can be Vigh-O-la or VIGH-uh-la.

I play the viola.
Vee- o-luh
admittedly the name is pronounced differently

Clearinguptheclutter · 03/03/2024 21:04

Vigh-Lut

HelpMebeok · 03/03/2024 21:02

@Supersimkin2

that sounds how I imagine someone with a strong Manchester accent saying the name.
