How would you pronounce Violet. I say Vi O Let but have lots of friends saying Vi Let

Oh and now I want to know how to pronounce Danielle that isn't Dan-yell.

Does anyone pronounce violent as 3 syllables?

Yes but the middle syllable is very quick and dominated by the first and third. MN has taught me this is called a schwa.

VIRE - let .. rhymes with fire-let.

I say violet like violent (without the n)

Agreed. I've never heard anyone say Vi O Let.

I’d say Vi-o-let, but the ‘o’ is the o at the beginning of ‘October’ and very soft.

It’s human nature to shorten sounds when repeating the same word.
Therefore Violet will eventually become Vi-let.
My dn is Danielle. Her parents have always pronounced her name as Dan-yell. Makes me cringe.

ie is meant to be pronounced y in that name.

Her parents are correct

It has 3 syllables but definitely one of those names that gets pronounced with 2 syllables when said fast or in some accents

EmailMyHeart · 04/03/2024 00:17

Rhymes with pilot in my accent (Scottish)

PaminaMozart · 04/03/2024 00:14

Surely check with the Dowaget Countess of Grantham (deceased). She was a Violet...

Personally I prefer Violetta. Vee-o-letta

Lauren0000 · 04/03/2024 00:11

Snugglemonkey · 04/03/2024 00:09

God, reading this makes mec100% certain I could never have a Violet. Despite it being a beautiful name.

The same as the colour and the flower. I'm pretty sure the name comes from the flower. Like Lily or Rose. This is how it's pronounced. Click on the little speaker icon to hear it.

Clearly it’s the same as the flower and colour but that doesn’t answer how people pronounce the word!

in my accent it’s something like Vie-uh-lth 😆

Station11 · 03/03/2024 22:39

Vie-let. Northern but lived in the south for 20 years!
