Not sure on a name

Hello everyone, I'm not here for nasty comments but honesty is key for me!

We are expecting our second boy and my husband LOVES the name Maverick.

I've looked into this and I know it's a popular name in America currently although I've never heard of anyone called Maverick.

I do not currently like any boy names that I can think of. I'm a teacher and all the names I don't mind, I know of children who have just put me off them!

I do like different names but I also don't want it to be silly.

There's obvious connections to Top Gun (which me and my husband have always loved, especially original.)

Is it ridiculous? Because I can't decide if it is or not!

He would be Mav for short.

It’s fine as a name, not my taste but my dc does have a predominantly American name that wouldn’t be liked on mumsnet.

As a nickname fine. As a name on a birth certificate it is truly awful.

It’s not ridiculous but I think it will be a faddy name. But if you like it then go for it

Mitchell is a good alternative suggestion.

Maverick wasn't his name, it was his call sign. Like Goose and Iceman.

I'm well aware of what his actual name was!

I don’t like it. It’s also a lot to live up to. Oh and Mav is an ugly shortening.

Mitchell and you nickname him Maverick within the family is a good call. I think it's fine but as others have said living up to the meaning may be a burden. I have an American friend with a Mack, which I think is a cooler sound for a boy than Mav.

I don't like it but my main concern is that it's such a lot for a child to live up to.

I quite like it, but would think of the meaning rebel or someone who goes and does his own thing.

Better than the ever popular Teddy.

My friend in HK called her kid Maverick and calls him Mav. It works for them. Not to my taste but each to their own

Oh and Rhymetime Maverick got called “Mav” by his parents too 😁. I just wish I could remember what his sibling was called - I remember thinking it was uncommon too but not quite as unusual as Maverick and now it’s really bugging me! 🤦‍♀️

I’ve met a toddler Maverick at Rhymetime. Nobody blinked an eye. Plus I suspect it’s the sort of name other kids will think is really cool.

There seem to be so many unusual names/ a wide variety used now - for example I’ve met a baby (non Scandi) Thor too. Yet I’ve actually only met a few kids with the same name as my son, even though it’s one of those very classic/ timeless (aka boring🤣) ones.

So I say go for it ! - I actually really like the sound of Maverick. I’d give him a more classic middle name to fall back on though just in case he is the shy type and dislikes standing out (although I suppose he can always shorten it to more commonplace Eric).

It isn’t though, a maverick is an independent thinker who behaves distinctly differently to most people.

Mavericks are rare, it’s a daft name to saddle your kid with, because it’s a tough thing to have to live up to.

Fine for a dog, not for a person, mostly because of the meaning. If you really like the Top Gun character/theme why not Mitchell, which was Maverick's real name and is an actual name.

Know a couple of children called Maverick. Not to my taste really but not that unusual in my neck of the woods (south west).

I don’t think it’s ridiculous at all. People forget that unusual names like that are used commonly now and nobody bats an eye. Go for it if you love it.

I personally wouldn’t do it. It’s a nice enough sound but a lot to live up to.
