Opinions on names please

I'm due in 2 weeks and have sort of formed a short list of names but would welcome some opinions on them.

We don't want anything too unusual and don't mind a name being popular, but would prefer to avoid anything that's likely to 'date' a lot.

For a girl we have thought of:

Lucy
Susannah (prob shortened to Susie)
Edith (shortened to Edie)
Martha

For a boy:

Charles (shortened to Charlie)
Seth
......? Really struggling for more boys names - neither of these are perfect - we like Charlie but one of DH's friends has a son of that name already (I'm not bothered about it but DH is not sure).

Thanks in advance for your help.

We kept our neames to ourselves when we were expecting DD. Had no problem thinking of a girls name but struggled for a boy. Afterwards when we had DD we told people what we had decided for a boy and got very mixed reactions - name was Arthur.

you're right in most case silver, but some people can be incredibly rude when it comes to names.

If I met a baby with the name Seth I would probably not think much about it. But if someone asks me my opinion on the name, then if I'm honest I admit I don't like it very much (don't hate it either)

Boys -- Theo, Silas, Gabriel, Joel, Magnus, Jonas, Jasper, Felix, Oscar, Toby?

Ah, that's why it's good to get opinions on here and not in real life, as on here you're inevitably going to get positive and negative responses as it's such a wide group of people!

I do believe that once you've chosen a name, whatever it is, people look upon it much more favourably and then before long the baby 'becomes that name anyway. (well that's what i'm hoping)

See, the good thing about just announcing he was called Seth and not asking opinions beforehand is that everyone we know loves the name!

Correction - if I had been called Seth, I would have called myself Sess. It's dd who would have been Theth!

I think it is popular in the sense that lots of people love it (although I know lots of people don't as well) but not that they would use it iyswim. It's got a way to go before there's more than one in an area, I think.

I like Susie / Susanah - pretty. Not madly keen on the other names, though. Particularly not Seth.

Hi Bellabear. I started a thread on here a week or two ago about the name Seth - found it was fairly popular and was warned that it was v current, which confused me as it's not on 'the list'. i guess it is getting more popular, but i still think it's a lovely name.

DH prefers Seb, but there's no way i could use the name Sebastian (no offence to anyone who likes that name, but we are a northern farming family and a name like that would be highly unusual!), so i thought Seth was a good alternative.

I like Seth - BUT, remember that a lot of children (and adults) have difficulty with th and s sounds. ~If I had been a boy called Seth, for example, I would have called myself Theth until I was nearly 8!

And if you live anywhere in the South East, you'd have to get used to him being called Seff by practically everybody! My ds's friend is called Ethan -but everybody says Efan. It drives his mum mad, but there's nothing you can do about it. My ds even wrote Happy Birfday Efan in his card before I could stop him!

We know and Edith - known as Edie - lovely! But same problem applies - Ediff!

Do you know I have met one Seth in my life who is an adult and since I named my son Seth ten weeks ago I have come across three other people intending to do so on here! Do you think it is going to be one of those names that suddenly mushrooms in popularity? (it's not even in the top 100 yet)

Lucy seems to get a positive reaction from most people (in real life and on here) and has been the front runner for months. I'm going off edith and martha as feel they may be too current and therefore date. Susannah will be our reserve i think!

Still not decided about boys names. I think we have considered and disregarded every traditional boys name, for one reason or another. Fingers crossed that we get a girl!

Oh no, Califrau. Our Tante Edith is a very posh Bavarian lady dripping with gold jewelery. She has a very snazzy kitchen that noone is allowed to get fingerprints on. She has an upswept hairdo kept in place with tons of hairspray.

Edith - no, it is an old ladys name her in Germany though so I am biased.
Martha - love

Charles - ok
Seth - love

I love Ned but it would not have gone with our surname.

Matilda?

Annabel....hugely underused considering how popular Isabelle is. DS's would have been Annabel.

Lucy and Susannah/Susie are lovely names.

Martha is very popular (a friend calls Martha part of the naming M trinity: Martha, Madeleine & .....? AMelia maybe? I forget, will be wracking my brain now!) but I see that popularity doesn't worry you.

I'm less overwhelmed by the boys' names tbh. Charles is the least likely to date. Avoid Seth if your sn is Ellis

I know Lucy's of all ages so it certainly won't age.

For traditional boys, how about:

William
Benjamin
Samuel
Joseph
Zachary
Daniel
Isaac
Edward

Of your two choices, i like Charles/Charlie best
