Tess and _____? Help with sibling name

Hi everyone,
Baby sister is on the way, and still no name.
Which one of these do you think goes well with an older sister Tess. Which one is your favourite? And why?

Thea, Theia, Teya
Nina
Freya
Reya

I really like Thea, Teya, Theia, Téa pronounced Tay-ah (as opposed to Thee-ah) Can you get the same pronounciation with Thea? I did hear one that goes like that.. And thoughts on same initials with sibling?

Freya also sounds nice but is it too popular?

Nina is quite rare like Tess, didn’t hear any in Kent. But is it english? Or does it sound foreign?

Runners up Tara and Erin, which I dont feel anything tbh.

I have a Nina and always fancied Tess if I had another. I’d say it’s not particularly English but international like Anna. That said, lots of usage in England - Nina Bawden, Queen’s grandmother, Nina Conti (I think), etc.

Love all your names though!

I definitely like Nina best esp with Tess 🥰

chocolateisavegetable · 22/02/2024 21:50

Taya is an alternative spelling which might get less mispronounced

Ballygowenwater · 22/02/2024 21:38

My first thought was Nell but Holly would work nicely too I think.

Vegemitemum · 22/02/2024 21:27

Tess and Bryony? Otherwise i think Thea is nice

DesertSnow · 22/02/2024 20:45

Another vote for Nina

Tess is lovely.

I like all of your name choices. I know Thea’s pronounced both ways. If that’s your favourite then go for it, it’s a gorgeous name. How well it goes with Tess doesn’t matter too much in the long run. More important you give your daughter a name you love! I would spell it Thea or Teya / Taya. I think Theia is more confusing.

Freya would be my second choice - gorgeous name and not ridiculously over used.

Nina is nice and less common if that’s important to you.

Reya is nice, I don’t know any Reya’s.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/02/2024 19:13

I always pair Tess with Lara - both spirited heroines from classic novels with short, pretty, romantic sounding names.

of your choices I think Nina fits the best with Tess, yes it’s quite internationally used compared to “English” Tess but both can be nn for longer names (Theresa and Antonia) and they just match in style to me.Plus Freya is very Scandi sounding (despite being popular here), Reya sounds Spanish to me, and Thea Greek so I don’t think an international feel for Nina matters.

I’d use Theia for the closest pronunciation to what you want (although I’d probably say Thay- ah) - Thea would get Thee-ah in The UK and Teya just looks misspelt. I wouldn’t go for the same initials for same sex siblings though as I think the post might be a bit confusing.

I know a few Nina’s under the age of 7 but it’s lovely.
Freya is nice but the rest aren’t my cup of tea.

adriftinadenofvipers · 22/02/2024 18:56

I only like Nina from your list. The first name that came into my mind was Martha. Tess and Martha?

Tess and Nina

I wouldn't have another T name - too CBBCish

timoteigirl · 22/02/2024 18:50

IMHO Tess is a friendly name so none of the options have the same feel. Thea, Theia, Teya are very hard with consonants. The others: Nina, Freya and Reya are very different style. If I need to pick one I would take Nina.

Kerry
Kate

I instantly thought 'Claudia'!
I think Freya is a lovely name.

Cheepcheepcheep · 22/02/2024 18:39

My favourite of these is Nina. I know an English Nina (one of my antenatal mums so 30ish), doesn’t sound unusual to me.

GuessThatGranny · 22/02/2024 18:38

Freya is a lovely name

and Nell would work well

KirstenBlest · 22/02/2024 18:37

Liza-Lou

RosaCaramella · 22/02/2024 18:22
  1. Nina
  2. Thea, Theia, Teya
  3. Freya
  4. Reya

I like Nina the best although I think of it as a diminutive more than a name in its own right.

I know you’ve not asked for suggestions but the first name I thought of to go with Tess is Eden, shortened to Edie (pronounced Ee-day). Simply because they sound nice together and match each other in unusualness and prettiness.

Peaceupatown · 22/02/2024 18:21

Tess and Claudia 💃🏼

LittleRobins · 22/02/2024 18:20

The only way people would pronounce it correctly is if you spelt it Tayah which I have seen before so is possible. Nina’s fine but I wouldn’t rule out Freya just because it’s too popular if it’s a name you like.

KirstenBlest · 22/02/2024 18:19

@LauderSyme , Taiyah looks like it would rhyme with Hiya.

@EmilyOC7 , I'd avoid another T name.
