I go back and forth on this. I love it and want to use it, then I lose interest.

So boring, it's probably the most common name in the world

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/02/2024 02:35

Maria is a Total classic - almost as timeless a girls name as you can get in E&W (not sure about Scotland or N.Ireland) .Only girls name that is more timeless is Elizabeth but that’s more popular.

It’s elegant , so international, has lots of cool namesakes and even has cute nn’s in Mia and Mai. Only problem is that I go back and forth on whether I actually really like the sound of it or not.

My friend has a little girl named Maria (she's 7 now) I think it's a beautiful name and sounds really pretty too. We are practicing Catholics though so it's not wildly unusual here Smile

DemBonesDemBones · 20/02/2024 19:05

It's beautiful.

BerthaFlapjack · 20/02/2024 12:59

It has too many religious connotations for my heathen sensibilities.

The only small Marias I have met have been European Catholics.

SallyWD · 20/02/2024 12:46

It's my favourite female name. It's very beautiful yet strong and timeless. I know it sounds Latin but I don't mind that, quite like Latin names anyway. Just the sound of it - Ma-ree-a is beautiful! I really wish I could have called my DD Maria but sadly had to choose a name that works in DH's culture too.

IncompleteSenten · 20/02/2024 12:40

It's a perfectly fine name. It's one of my middle names and as a kid I preferred it to my first name

EmailMyHeart · 20/02/2024 12:40

Went to university with a Maria - Northern Irish, best craic ever and beautifully piercing blue eyes. Had such a girl crush on her and have loved the name ever since.

JanewaysBun · 20/02/2024 12:38

Lovely name.

JustJessi · 20/02/2024 11:08

I’d think it was a European family. The only little Maria I have taught was Eastern European

PickledScrump · 20/02/2024 11:05

I like it, it’s my daughter’s middle name.
I’ve never seen sound of music so no link there for me.

MaloneMeadow · 20/02/2024 11:01

Old fashioned and boring. It’s not the worst but I definitely wouldn’t choose it

Maria is far more popular in the US than Marianne, which is French

Wasn't disputing the origins of the name just the way it feels to me, being well an American. The States are a pretty big and names vary region to region, state to state. Funnily enough, just like they do over here.

Personally, I think you should go with the name your like op. Forget about everyone else opinions. Both my kids ha e American names. Not saying the name originated there! Definitely not as one is biblical but ypu only seem to hear it stateside or on someone over the age of 60. But we love it

Comedycook · 20/02/2024 09:30

Very international

Nice enough

TerfTalking · 20/02/2024 09:24

Shouts European catholic to me. Now if you're a European catholic that's absolutely fine but otherwise it doesn't float my boat.

peaceinourtime · 20/02/2024 09:21

Maria is a beautiful name that is timeless and will never date.

Pia is also pretty.

Pis ….. Sounds like a car….

MillshakePickle · 19/02/2024 18:49

I know a 4 Yr old Maria and a new baby Maria. I think it's a very sweet name both girls suit the name beautifully.

Marianna, Marianne feel far too American

Maria is far more popular in the US than Marianne, which is French

Pussygaloregalapagos · 20/02/2024 07:14

Lovely, a classic beautiful name.

theduchessofspork · 20/02/2024 07:11

I technically like it but it reminds me of a sad girl with green teeth in primary school.. but that’s not relevant for you.. also the von trapps but nothing wrong with that.

I think it’s one of the world’s most popular international names, and it’s undoubtably a classic

I do prefer Marianne though

Claudia, Julia or Francesca might be alternatives

Sounds as if you're very unsure, regardless of opinions on here (which really don't matter if you like the name).

honeyfox · 20/02/2024 00:14

Happened to my mum too, Maria but lots called her Marie and she went by both.

I have a similar derivative name and it's constantly misspelled as well. A bit annoying.

Still think Maria is a lovely name and not overused these days.

daylightdreamer · 20/02/2024 00:04

I'm a Maria, specifically one named after West Side Story. I don't mind the name but an awful lot of people sing sound of music or Blondie at me. Also the sheer volume of people who reply to my work emails with "dear Marie" or phone calls go like this; "what's your name?" "Maria." blah blah blah "well thanks very much Marie!" It infuriates me every time

ChocolateCinderToffee · 19/02/2024 20:55

I really like it. Quite unusual these days.

AdriftAbroad1 · 19/02/2024 19:08

Every single Spanish woman over about 55 is called Maria something.

ie Maria ... Carmen (and they go by Carmen)

The make equivalent is Jose .... Luis whatever. etc.

I do not like it. Dated and overused.
