Hormones/baby name regret - how do you pronounce Talia?!

Is it too out there with a top 50 sibling name?
We were pronouncing tal ee a rather than tarl ee a and obviously knew pronounced the other way but worried were actually the minority. We announced her name last month but every other day wonder whether we should have gone for our safe choice.
Thanks in advance

I thought it was Thalia, not Talia. Pronounced the same way.

FlamingoFlamboyance · 20/02/2024 23:47

I have a Tahlia (Tah to rhyme with car) and I'd pronounce your spelling as Ta-Lee-a (hard a sound)

They're both lovely names/ways of pronouncing. I love how unusual it is and always get told it's a beautiful name, people will get used to it and you'll come to accept that people who know her will pronounce it correctly and those that don't will just be in passing anyway. It doesn't bother me if someone says it wrong and I only correct them if she'll be seeing them again

Moveoverdarlin · 20/02/2024 23:35

ta lee uh

Charlieradioalphapapa · 20/02/2024 23:33

The two I know are pronounced Talya . I also know a Thalia of Greek Cypriot heritage. Hers was pronounced with the ‘Th’ followed by alia with s short ‘a’

outingnamechange12 · 20/02/2024 23:31

Obvs name change for this but my name is Tali and I can assure you that is pronounced Ta-Lee not Tar-Lee but you will often find people shoehorn a random R in. I've given up correcting people. Many will also spell it Tally.

Talia is the same but with the 'ah' at the end.

Previous poster is right, Tali is an Israeli name with Tal being the male version.

LizzieSiddal · 20/02/2024 23:28

It’s a lovely name, I know a lawyer who’s called that, she’s in her late 20s.

Don’t worry about how others pronounce it.

LilBus · 20/02/2024 23:24

Tar Lee ah there’s a girl in my dds class and that’s how she and her family pronounce it

Snugglemonkey · 20/02/2024 23:22

I don't understand the random insertion of r sounds when they are not in the word. It would annoy me if it were my child's name being mangled.

Bbq1 · 20/02/2024 23:10

I would pronounce it as Thalea as I think it's Spanish in origin?

MaggieFS · 20/02/2024 23:10

Tah-Lee-a

There's one in DC's class.

mdinbc · 20/02/2024 23:09

I would say Ta-lee-a with the first syllable short a. Not Tay-lee-a

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/02/2024 22:50

I’d probably say Tahl - ee- ah at first ( because I’m more familiar with Thalia and Natalia ) but would correct myself when you said Tal - ee- ah once. There’s multiple “correct”pronunciations of lots of lovely names (Helena, Evelyn, Naomi etc) . Even commonplace names like Eleanor and Alexander can be pronounced very differently depending on where in the country you are from. I wouldn’t change beautiful Talia just because of that.

FayCarew · 19/02/2024 17:37

I'd say it as Ta(r)l-y-a, Ta(r)l rhymes with Dahl.
Are you saying it as Tal-EE-a (like Maria)?
Or as TAL-y-a?

RunningFromInsanity · 19/02/2024 14:34

I pronounce it Tarl-Lee-ah as I’ve grown up watching the Sidemen and that’s how she’s pronounced it. She is a YouTuber and singer (Talia Mar).

One simple correction by you and I would pronounce it your way though.

greendaisie · 19/02/2024 14:32

I know a German Talia pronounced TAH lee ah with the emphasis on the first syllable (TAH)

No R sound though..

Psychoticbreak · 19/02/2024 14:31

One of my Australian cousins kids is a Tah-lee-a. I think it might be an accent thing but definitely no r sound.

greendaisie · 19/02/2024 14:30

I'd say Tah-lee-ah

I'm confused by the added R in Tar-lee-ah?!

Chanxex · 19/02/2024 13:31

Ta lee a. Vvv popular here. There were 4 in youngest primary class. One of my favourite names

FeralCats99 · 19/02/2024 13:29

Thank you so much all - met a mum at the nursery gates Friday who repeatedly said Tar Lee a despite us politely saying Ta Lee a several times which I've been mulling over all weekend!

Love the meaning and am trying to put the doubts out my mind - we register her on Wednesday so thank you for the reassurance

It's beautiful. I would say don't go for the safe option rather than the one you love. Everyone will quickly get used to it, including yourselves!

EllieQ · 19/02/2024 10:17

Ta-lee-ah pronunciation here. A lovely name. I recognise it from a character in the 90s TV series Babylon 5, but can’t remember which way she pronounced it!

2024theplot · 19/02/2024 10:12

The Talia's I've met pronounce it Tahh-lia but they've all had very posh English accents. I think it's a lovely name however it's pronounced

Greekmyth · 19/02/2024 10:05

Love it

Cameraclick · 19/02/2024 10:01

Probably Ta-lee- ah. I know a Tahlia pronounced Tarlia. I would think Talia was a nickname for Natalia and for Natalia I wouldn’t use a long A, same as in Natasha/Natalie

Zola1 · 19/02/2024 08:42

Ta-lee-a.
For the long A I'd expect to see Tahlia.

I don't think it's out there, I know a few adult and child Talias, and also a Tali, its a nice name.
