What nickname would you use for Doris?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
AllrightNowBaby · 06/02/2024 15:15

Doris??? Just no!
Awful name and you’re trying to find a shortened version because I think you already know this.

TraitorsGate · 06/02/2024 15:13

Dilly Dolly Daydream in our family

RichardsGear · 06/02/2024 15:08

I agree with pp that some 'old lady' names are just not ripe for reviving, such as Hilda, Gladys and Doris.
Enid/Edith sound quite sharp and almost chic to me, in a Dark Academia kind of way (apologies for prerentiousness!) but Doris...no.

Dolly.
i had an aunt Doris always called Dolly.

Same here, a great aunt called Dolly or Doll for Doris.

shreknjumps · 06/02/2024 14:42

I'd no more call a daughter of mine Doris than I would Karen.

There's enough misogyny to deal with in life without lumbering her with a whole extra layer. Poor kid

Nickname for Doris
shreknjumps · 06/02/2024 14:39

Yep, slang for girlfriend and Cockney rhyming slang for being gay

kitsuneghost · 06/02/2024 14:39

Doris is already pretty short and easy to say
Dot is maybe a little shorter but harder to say (many drop the t resulting in d'oh)

Needmorelego · 06/02/2024 14:34

@shreknjumps really - I have never heard that !

shreknjumps · 06/02/2024 14:27

Doris is a nickname already for girlfriend. I really wouldn't 😬

ToWorkOrNotToWork · 06/02/2024 14:27

Dodo

peaceinourtime · 06/02/2024 14:26

My great aunt was a Dorothy, she was known as Doey amongst family and friends. That may work.

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 06/02/2024 13:40

Could also go with Rissy or Rissa

WinterLobelia · 06/02/2024 13:36

squashyhat · 06/02/2024 10:26

Dolly

I was going to say Dolly also.

They are both awful names IMO.

Mind you, I like the pp suggestion of Dizzy as a nickname so that (for good or bad) gives an idea as to my tastes!!

Cheepcheepcheep · 06/02/2024 13:33

I had a great aunt who was a Dorothy that everyone called Doy.

Riapia · 06/02/2024 13:32

King Herod’s wife was named Doris.
I am reliably informed that he called her Do Do . Very affectionate man apparently.
😉😁😁

Dory. As in ‘Finding Dory’, the sequel to ‘Finding Nemo’.

Dory is a lovely idea. I know someone who is Dory, short for Dorelia, which is nice.

Flottie · 06/02/2024 13:29

We have a dog called Dora (I know not quite the same) but we naturally end up calling her Dory or Dors

guineverehadgreeneyes · 06/02/2024 13:17

Why do you have to have a ready made "nickname" for a forthcoming child?

Surely what you are looking for is not a "nickname" but an abbreviation of your chosen name?

When I was a child, nicknames developed as a child grew up. They might be called by a nickname at home by mum and dad but their grandparents might use a different nickname for them. They might acquire another nickname at school and another at secondary or high school. And the nicknames might not necessarily be based on their name.

Now I see so many posters writing - We are thinking of naming our baby girl "XXXXXXXXX". What is a nickname for "XXXXXXXXX"?

I find it rather an odd trend.

HoHoHoliday · 06/02/2024 13:12

I adopted a dog called Doris! It's not a name I would have chosen but I grew to love it because it was her name. Her nicknames were:
Dorrie
Doz
Dozzy
Dizzy
Doddle
I'm sure all work well for a small human too. Doris is a fab name!

MYSTERIOUSGIRL2024 · 06/02/2024 12:59

Aww my Nanny was called Doris short for Dorothy though she always got Doris but I do love the shortened versions of either Dottie or Dot!

Riverlee · 06/02/2024 12:58

Heard a lovely Doris Day song on the radio today. Made me love the name.

FloofCloud · 06/02/2024 12:56

@NigelHarmansNewWife - well that one completely bypassed me! Thanks for the heads up ... off to find a new name for potential puppy lol 😂

NachosAndCheese · 06/02/2024 12:44

Personally I think it’s an awful name. I can’t imagine any teenager being happy about being called Doris. 🤷🏻‍♀️

onwardsup4 · 06/02/2024 12:29

Zoomerang · 06/02/2024 10:06

Please don’t call a baby Doris!

Aw why not ? My amazing nan was called Doris. Now my daughters dog is called Doris which I think it's unusual and cute ! Dotty for nick name OP? As she gets older she'll get the nick name that suits her
