As for Aryan being common in India - my family are Indian but we don't live in India, so when choosing a name for our children we had to ensure that none of the names on the list were funny/rude/offensive etc. in the culture the child would be growing up in. Surely that goes without saying?

Well we know a few Hindu and Muslim boys called Aryan in the UK. I think most people are capable of working out that they're not white supremisists so it's fine.

It's also common in west London. Because people don't need to prioritize whether other people might think they are white supremacists, when they clearly aren't. It's not funny/rude/offensive. It's a name.

My first thought was that you might be white supremacists - sorry! When I read your comments, it became clear that that's not the case, but if I'm honest, if I met a baby Arian I'd probably wonder if maybe his parents were a bit ignorant and didn't know the negative, racist connotations of the name? Orion is very similar but without the white supremacist vibe.

Sure. But I was trying to give an early factual post to avoid people making offensive comments about a common name that a lot of people have or have given to their sons.

I wouldn't call my son Aryan or Arian. But I'd also avoid saying to the parent of an Arian "your kid's name reminds me of the Hitler youth" because that's unhelpful and offensive.

Exactly I know Hindus and Muslims called Aryan. It's not seen as a blonde hair, blue eyes, Nazi youth name by them!

For reference, for us it means ‘noble’
and it’s pronounced as in Ariana but without the A at the end.
So usually Ar (as in car) - Ree-An
or Ari (as in Harry)-Ann
but never air ree an.

I teach in the UK and have taught MANY lovely Aryan/variations. Lovely, cultural name.

It's very close to 'Aryan' which has racist connotations.

This. All I hear is Aryan and I suspect most will as well. I'm sorry but unless you are white supremacists I would stay clear. People will judge the name and assume you ate racist.

You pp that you are learning Welsh, so it might not strike you as being a strange name to use as a name. People saying it as Ah-yun or Arry-an would wind me up.

If it helps I’ve never thought of it that way before reading this thread. The one we know is part Iranian so I’ve always just taken it as different culture, different naming style!

I know 2 little Arians in London both of Indian heritage, living in predominantly south Asian communities so the name doesn’t cause any issues for them. It’s a nice name.
