Shouldn't it be due a comeback? I think it sounds kind of earthy and folky

I know a teenage Keith but it is a name I associate with a 60+ man

shearwater2 · 02/02/2024 15:41

I'm 48 and when I was 10/11 and moved schools there were two Keiths in my class, and I thought it was old fashioned then for someone our age (in about 1986).

So yeah, why not? Babies being called Keith, Malcolm and Barry will crack me up. Girls being called Sheila, Brenda and Barbara.

RestingCatsArseFace · 02/02/2024 15:34

Don't forget Kenneth (Kennif).

Needmorelego · 02/02/2024 14:34

Sorry to do that to you @Hobbi 🙂

Hobbi · 02/02/2024 14:28

Needmorelego · 02/02/2024 14:22

@Hobbi "lickle" not "ickle" 😂😂
(I love that word..... sorry)
@ginasevern I always think of the Spitting Image song too. Possibly because my poor childhood friend Keith (aka Keef) had to put up with "PRETEND YOUR NAME IS KEITH (his) SURNAME " on a loop for about 2 years.

'Lickle' gives me the, erm, ick.

In the spirit of this rather odd thread, Keith should indeed have a comeback, but spelt, 'Coeph'.

😂😂

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 02/02/2024 14:14

Good grief, no!

ginasevern · 02/02/2024 14:12

I always think of Keith in the same bracket as Kevin, Gary, Barry, Nigel and that sort of thing. Pretty dire really.

It also lost the tiny amount of credibility it did have with the Spitting Image song "stick a deckchair up your nose and pretend your name is Keith".

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/02/2024 14:08

I met a 3 year old Keith at a school open night. He was very cute and no doubt his peers will have no worries.

I do find watching Call the Midwife hard..... Camera pans to an adorable cute lickle baby.
Then we find out the baby is called Gary or Brenda.
Poor 1950s/60s babies 😂

Yes, almost as hard as hearing the word, 'ickle'.

I'm totally not getting the phoebe debate. It's a PH like PH always has been and always be....F!

Agreed. . I know several and they pronounce their name feebie. PH is always pronounced like f , photo, phone, etc.
To pronounce it with a th sound the name would have to be Thebe.
I am not keen on Keith and not because it's a name from the 60s I just don't like the sound of it.

Lifeinlists · 02/02/2024 13:56

Please don't!

Anyfing wiv a 'th' sound is going to be condemned to default 'f' pretty soon. Lazy pronunciation is catching, evidently.

And it's a very dull name, 60 years out of date and not due a comeback.

JoanThursday · 02/02/2024 13:56

Oh that's very good, @Hobbi !

Needmorelego · 02/02/2024 13:56

@JoanThursday glad to have made your day 😂😂

Hobbi · 02/02/2024 13:53

@Needmorelego

There is an alternative pronunciation of, 'Phoebe'. In the original Greek, the 'b' is pronounced as a soft 'v'. In no
Instances is the 'ph' sounded as anything other than an 'f'.

JoanThursday · 02/02/2024 13:52

Needmorelego · 02/02/2024 13:50

@Ghuunvg @JoanThursday I am deeply confused 😂

Edited

😂 This has really made me chuckle. Sorry @Needmorelego !

I actually quite like Keith. And I like Iain but not Ian.

Gary has to be the worst.

Agreed, Gary sucks, its so plodding.

But if you step away from the connotations of Keith, it's quite a good name. It packs a lot into one syllable...The K is hard and manly but the TH is soft, and the "ei" gives it a little weirdness.

I love it!
